Ken Gargett Posted November 30, 2007 Posted November 30, 2007 The Czars party was a fabulous evening but it may have been slightly overshadowed by the warm up lunch (which is my excuse for not winning the poker). A mate’s birthday and he traditionally puts on a great day. This was one of his best. Eleven of us gathered to celebrate. Kicked off with… Paul Bara Champagne, 2000 (magnum) Philipponat Clos des Goisses 1992 Dom Perignon 1996 Krug 1988 Krug 1990 (I’m usually a huge fan of the 88 but the 90 beat it hands down on the day). Leflaive Puligny Montrachet ‘Les Combettes’ 1995 (to bottles to check variation, one superb). Delegrange-Bachelet Montrachet 1989 (brilliant) Coche-Dury Corton Charlemagne 1995 (legendary wine and deservedly so) Then some reds… Rousseau Chambertin Clos de Beze 1993 Rousseau Chambertin 1993 Mongeard-Mugneret Grands-Echezeaux 1993 DRC La Tache 1993 DRC La Tache 1978 (one of the world’s most famous wines and through this mate, I have been incredibly fortunate to try it many times. It gets better and better, tho sadly that was his last bottle. It was simply one of the greatest wins I have ever drunk. Truly sublime). DRC Romanee-Conti 1983 (brought as a back up in case of any cork failures but we drank it anyway an superb, as it should be). Troplong-Mondot 1990 (two bottles, my notes got a bit sketchy here). De Fargues 2001 Yquem 2001 (I maintain that this is one of the very greatest Yquems ever made and may in time be considered the greatest of all). Grahams VP 1970 Quinta do Noval Nacional 1970 (amazingly rare wine and wonderful but the Grahams matched it). Then a cleanser with a Cohiba Maduro 5 Genios, a Lustau Superior Old Muscat. What a day. Then to Rob’s.
