any thoughts on best ever covers?

i'll suggest two.

one is bruce covering himself with the 'blinded by the light' on 'live in dublin' and the other is nina simone's 'my way'. greatest respect to frank, whom i love, but this is the all time classic version. i didnn't believe it either , till i heard it.

Frigid Pink covered House of the Rising Sun in the 70's that was classic...completely different than Eric Burden...more psychedelic. At least thats how I remember it :lookaround:

Ike and Tina's "Proud Mary"

Jimi's "Watchtower"

Cream's "Spoonful"

I'm embarrassed to admit that I like Fine Young Cannibals' cover of "Suspicous Minds" as well.

Early Rolling Stones, "It's All Over Now".

Youngbloods "Get Together".

Steppenwolf "The Pusher" (written by country singer Hoyt Axton)

» My vote would have to be for Cake's cover of Gloria Gaynor's "I Will

» Survive" with a close second for Social Distortion's cover of Johnny

» Cash's "Ring of Fire".

Great call Strayvector two that immediately came to my mind as well!

Lots of great Kinks songs covered by various...

Stop Your Sobbing- Chrissie Hynde and the Pretenders knocked it out!

You really Got Me- been covered by over 40 artists probably most notably by Van Halen.

Celluloid Heros- well done by Joan Jett & The Blackhearts

Sunny Afternoon- Jimmy Buffet

Where have All the Good Times Gone- David Bowie, Van Halen & Sir Elton John

Um I love The Kinks by the way:-D

How about Joey Ramone's cover of "What a Wonderful World".

He recorded it just before he passed away.

Forgot about my favorite. Forget my last post, those will be dropped down to no.2 and no.3. My vote for best cover is that of Otis Reding's cover of the Rolling Stones' "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction". Jagger proclaimed that having Otis do a cover to a Rolling Stones song was better than being at no.1 on the charts. Otis' arrangement of the song is genius especially the use of trumpets instead of guitars.

Johnny Winters Live - Jumping Jack Flash, followed closely by Leon Russels live cover of same at the concert for Bangledesh (he mixed it with Young Blood, great arrangement).

Red Hot Chili Peppers cover of Higher Ground

Jackson Browne and Joan Osborne covering Dylan's "My Back Pages". Spectacular IMHO

Also, Timothy Schmit of Eagles fame does a great cover of CSNY's "Carry On"

Both can be found on the soundtrack for Steal this Movie.

Back in about '86, Johnny Cash performed on Late Night With David Letterman. His song of choice was "Blowin' In The Wind" by Bob Dylan. It sounded like the voice of God. Cash never actually recorded the song, but I managed to find it on YouTube... it's since been removed, but not before I was able to snarf it, and now have it on my Nano... it's not exactly high-quality audio... but the performace will give you goosebumps.

Others I like:

Cash doing "Rusty Cage" and "Cocaine Blues"

Skynyrd and Clapton doing JJ Cale songs

Metallica's take on Bob Segar's "Turn The Page"

CSNY's take on the Beatles' "Blackbird"

Gram Parsons doing the Stones' "Wild Horses" -- a song he'd inspired in the first place

Janis Joplin doing Kristofferson's "Me and Bobbie McGee"

That'll do for now...

One more- you've probably heard the Black Crows' version, but back when Pigpen was with the Grateful Dead, they did a killer version of "Hard To Handle".
