Jimmy2 Posted October 17, 2007 Posted October 17, 2007 Thanks Rob i guess i will wait until i hear some good news or from a new fatory code review on the sel#1. Good hearing good news about the #2..
greenpimp Posted October 17, 2007 Posted October 17, 2007 Nice reviews I have a 50 cab of early 07 JLO2. They are great, really the best 2007's I've sampled so far this year. Dark and potent looking, the box reeks of strong Cuban tobacco before I even open it. Very rich, full of flavor and promise and it's been hard to not sample one every week or so even though I know they'll be even better later. I would agree with you that the recent JLO1s, however, have been very unimpressive to me so far. Fairly bland.
shrink Posted October 17, 2007 Posted October 17, 2007 Another candid review from the man, hisself. I was actually thinking about getting a box of '07 JL#1 to lay down. Not now. You know, Rob... your reviews have actually saved me a lot of money! Keep those 2007 reviews comin', boss. You'll make me rich...

CIGARHead Posted October 17, 2007 Posted October 17, 2007 Those suckers are some of my favorites...but I just hate the look of them with a band. From now on when I order the No. 1 or No. 2 I am askin Lisa to give them a little snip snip to remove those eye sores;-)
anacostiakat Posted October 17, 2007 Posted October 17, 2007 The JL#2 used to be a staple of mine. Went through a number of '04 and '05 boxes. Got away from them during a change in the palate in '06. They were always a good ROI. Good to hear this review.
Sandman Posted October 17, 2007 Posted October 17, 2007 Thanks for the great review as usual. I too love the #2 and have several 06 cabs put away, but now I feel I must try the 07's. They look amazing from here and I feel as if I can smell them from here. Thanks!
kjellfrick Posted October 17, 2007 Posted October 17, 2007 A little mix-up with the pictures, Rob? I have a couple of cabs of JL1 from -00 and -01. I'm smoking from the -01 cab and though they seemed fine to me when I bought them I've started to appreciate them less and less. The draw is fine, the wrappers are oily but the taste just doesn't do it for me. There's a hint of insecticide in it somehow... (blasphemy, I know). Just lit up one to make sure, and yes, the verdict stands. :-( Edit: Most of the annoying taste disappeared a third down. Quite ok after that, but still not my cuppa... Guess I'll have to try the other cab for comparisons sake.
El Presidente Posted October 18, 2007 Author Posted October 18, 2007 » A little mix-up with the pictures, Rob? Just noticed that myself One of the most frustrating things in the cigar world is inconsistency. I can forgive an 07 JLS1 for not being "on". Sure I would have liked to have had a peek into its soul or potential but it wasn't ready and I can live with that. There is no excuse for a 2001. I can honestly say after smoking countless boxes of JLS1 since the mid 90's when I first came to appreciate them that they are to me one of the finest light bodied complex cigars in the world. I rank them alongside some of the ealrier Sancho Panza Molinos. Unfortunately I have had enough dud cigars of both (with age) to ever give a blanket recommendation. If I permanently deducted every poor cigar I have had from my rotation then I would have nothing in my humidor ;-)
smokum Posted October 18, 2007 Posted October 18, 2007 Well lets hope the box of JLS1 with exact same codes I have in the locker is better than the one you smoked !!!:-(

shrink Posted October 20, 2007 Posted October 20, 2007 Naturally when a member calls me to a cigar relatted emergency I don my cape and slip down the pole to the Humidor :-) Hey, there Stogie Man! Got a dry mouth? How about a Slurpee?
El Presidente Posted October 22, 2007 Author Posted October 22, 2007 I was picturing something different....though I have the same hat ;-)
El Presidente Posted November 15, 2008 Author Posted November 15, 2008 Jimmy asked me as to my thoughts on 2007 releases of Juan Lopez No 1 and No 2. Naturally when a member calls me to a cigar relatted emergency I don my cape and slip down the pole to the Humidor :-) Juan Lopez Seleccion No 2 (ERU ENE 07) Juan Lopez Seleccion No 1 (TMO ENE 07) I smoked both cigars in the am. The No 2 on Monday and the No 3 on Tuesday. Accompanied both by fresh brewed coffee (black) and a glass of water. The Juan Lopez Seleccion No 2 was a delight visually. Well constructed, great oily wrapper but an aroma at cold which was green tea in nature. They certainly smelled young with no barnyard aroma to speak of. Clipping the foot I found a great draw but again a greeness on the tongue and lips. I new I was conducting cigar infanticide here but duty calls. Fired up the foot and I found a cigar which responded as if awoken prematurely from a slumber. A mishmash of dry grass, black pepper and sour milk which no doubt reflected its own shock. I cursed my stupidity in pursuing this cigar when the aroma at cold should have told me to stop. Anyway...I am here now. Well the cigars initial shock and light profile quickly turned to anger within the first inch. Now medium full bodied it hit back with ruthless amounts of white pepper through the nose and a bitter charred wood note on the palate. There was black pepper there, some iodine notes and generally a message to F##k off. The cigar was tempestuous, wild and generally uninviting. The aroma from the dense white smoke was equally as aggressive. I almost put it down. Into the second third and the Juan Lopez seleccion No 2 transformed itself from a bunny boiler Glenn Close (Fatal Attraction) to a sweet and syrupy Ashley Judd. It still possessed a little steel (medium bodied) but now there was lashings of sweet coffee/toffee and a nice hit of milk chocolate. Through the nose the white pepper persisted. This was one of the great Jekyll and Hyde performances I had seen since my second girlfriends psychotic tantrums .....once she moved in (I contemplated calling an exorcist to get her out...but I moved apartments while she was at work....it was safer and cheaper ;-) ) Really enjoying this cigar. It is now a classic Juan Lopez No 2 and the reason it is one of the best of all Robusto. Sweet spice, milk coffee/choolate core continuing almost to the very end. A little harsh in the last inch but it can be forgiven. Will be a cracker in a year or so. Moved a dozen sticks to my section of the humidor. Now an 88 likely 92. Juan Lopez Seleccion No 1 (TMO ENE 07) One of my favourite cigars and a go to cigar for me. Love the Corona Gorda vitola and this cigar has always exemplified the finest qualities of light to medium bodied complex Habanos. Construction was good on this cigar. Aroma at cold told me nothing of what lay beyond. Not as visually appealing as the Seleccion no 2 with a flatter wrapper. Still a good looking cigar. Clipped the cap. Great draw again. Little discernable flavour on the lips. Maybe a grassy edge but I have to search for it so I remove the thought from my mind. Fired up the foot....great combustion and nice billowig white smoke. Dissappointed in the opening which delivered little. Toasted tobacco but a little to much grassiness for my liking as it was not balanced out with sweetness or coffee. This one dimensional performance continued for much of the first third. Nice but no real redeeming features. Into the second third and the flavours remain closed. I sense there is more there that wants to come out but it was going to show me nothing. Reminded me of my third girlfriend into whom I plowed everything I had except for the thing I wanted. Six months of my life I will never get back. Where was I? The monotony of the seleccion No 1 is getting to me. Toasted tobacco mixed with a blend of dry and green grass. Some highlights of cream and honey but they do not last and never really deliver (memories of girlfriend no 3 again). Smoking the JLS1 was like watching a good football team having a shithouse day. You are depressed, angry yet hopefull for better days ahead. Has this JLS1 got what it takes to be a very good cigar in a few years. I think so. Can it be great? I doubt it. Will try again in six months but I don't want to waste a lot of time with it. Been there before ;-) 84/85
