Thank you for another very nice review. But I have to ask........ are you still on some

kind of hallucinogenic medication?

Thread title of JLS2, cigar reviewed JLS1. And this crazy talk of pictures of Lisa?

Next you'll be talking of fantasies of her in a french maid's outfit. Perhaps it's more than

the "lurgy", and there are some other more deeply rooted issues. Maybe PT or Shrink

would be willing to consult with you.

Get well soon.

Rob did you try another without the wrapper or have you found the reason behind this soapy taste? I ask for 2 reasons, first I experienced this a couple of months back with A Jose Piedra Breva LOG Sept 06, it was the only one from half the box and I've not had another since. Secondly I've just recieved 3 singles from Lisa as part on an order today of this JL S1 PSL Nov 06. It was an experience smoking that JP (not for long mind you), but for you to go the distance for this review really shows amazing commitment thanks.

I set it down in the gifted PCC ashtray (one of the ugliest I

have ever seen....no doubt there is a message from PCC there somewhere  ).

No pictures of the ashtray..........must be really bad!.....:-P

I didn't take the wrapper off the second but dry boxed it for the best part of a week. Sourness gone. Still doesn't answer the source of the problem but eliminates in my mind any form of wrapper taint causing the issue. Of course it may have been a single cigar issue.

The next time I have a sour tasting cigar I will remove the wrapper at the 1st third point and see what differences come about. That should be a definitive answer as to whether it is wrapper specific.

» What is the amount of day you should dry box a cigar.

Out of a 65% humidor where the cigar has rested for 60 days + : 1 -2 days.

Out of a 65% humidor where the cigar has rested for 30 days - 60 days + : 2-3 days.

Fresh cigar right out of the box...no rest: 5-7 days.

From a 70% or higer humidor: 1 week.

Keep in mind the humidity leves of where you live. If you are 70+ humidity in the evironment where you are going to dry box the cigar then it is not going to help. In those times I place the drybox in an airconditioned room which normally sits at 50-55% humidity (most do).

Feeling better this week but still short of primal glory and so....to be fair...I won't score this cigar.

Have you ever loved and hated a cigar at the same time? I experienced the mixed emotions with this JLS1 Corona Gorda. There were times during the review that I was in synch with what it was trying to achieve and other times that I thought it was a lousy cigar needing far more time. Two hours later and I am still unsure how I feel.

The example I selected was from an open box in the humidor. November 2006 and a wrapper which I wouldn't call attractive but the construction was good. I felt like a mild medium cigar which would awaken my tastebuds from a weeks slumber.

Cmell at cold was a funky tobacco citrus. Smell at foot was toasted tobacco and Chinese 5 spice. Clipped the cap and the draw was fine. Residual flavour on the lips was simple toasted tobacco.

Gently fired up the foot and took a long draw exhaling through the nose. Minimal white pepper through the nose and I realised that I should have chosen a fuller cigar to recharge the senses as this JLS1 was light to medium bodied. I wouldn't have minded except for a belligerant sourness which upset me no end. After a few well chosen expletives and a stern talking to I set it down in the gifted PCC ashtray (one of the ugliest I have ever seen....no doubt there is a message from PCC there somewhere  ). I wanted to give the cigar 2-3 minutes to settle down and find its feet. Opened a few e-mails in the interim.....nice one of Lisa dressed in a nurses outfit with a thermometer ready for injection....nice photoshop Ross  Knowing it was private and for my eyes only I forwarded it onto Lisa...you will be hearing from her shorlty ;-)

Back to the JLS1. It needed no touch up from the lighter and within a few draws there was plenty of smoke and some delightfull milk coffee and citrus (orange peel) notes on the palate. The aroma of the smoke was also sweet cocoa in nature which captivated me until the surreal effect was tarnished by a sourness on the pack of the palate. Hard to describe the sourness....akin to the sourball hard lollies we get here and which my children enjoy tormenting me with. The apparent sourness that I found was interesting in that it was all on the "finish" of the draw. Initially the flavours of coffee and citrus peel would dance their merry dance on the tongue and then just when you thought it was going to be a magical moment....sourness would close out the performance. I have heard people mention a "Soapy" taste to some Cuban cigars and I think that we are talking here about the same thing. It is certainly a possibility that a roller has some soap residue on his hands when rolling which could explain that. Then again there is no soap in the bathroom facilities in the factories .........relax....I just made that up

If I was to rank my theories on this "soapy taste" come sourness I think that what we have here is an over use of moisture in the wrapper. I have noticed this only in the past two years (and it is very infrequent) and it coincides with state of the art wrapper moisturing "chambers" being used in the major factories. My theory is that occasionally the settings for these Italian made chambers are incorrect and the wrappers get overly moist prior to use.

I will try another tomorrow but remove the wrapper entirely. I will quickly find out if eliminatimg the wrapper eliminates the sourness/soapiness encountered.

The cigar changed little throughout its length. Its core flavours were milk coffee and citrus. There were some flowery Hibiscus notes present throughout and it was all wrapped up in a light to medium body. Unfortunately the sour/soapy ending to each draw ruined much of the cigar and it was present to the end. It is the first time that I have experienced this in a cigar. Much like enjoying the flavour delivery of a great desert...tasting every delicate nuance of flavour in your mouth and enjoying it immensely....only to be overcome by a feeling of nausea.

Will try the wrapperless test tomorrow and see if we can narrow it down.
