KB24 Posted September 5, 2007 Posted September 5, 2007 Anyone ever had a glass or bottle of this? I had a bottle on my birthday last Thursday and I'm not a big wine guy but it was excellent. Thoughts?

Hope you had a great birthday -- mine was the day before yours!

Thoughts? always had a top reputation but the mere name brings out the blushes. early 90s, before i was writing about wine, i got to vinexpo in bordeaux. it is an amazingly intense week and on the last afternoon, i wondered up to the cakebread stand. they poured me a glass and all i could think of to say (i really was absolutely knackered and all tasted out) was how did they come up with such a silly name. bloke looks at me and says 'it is my family's name'. needless to say, i was not offered any further tastes and i slunk off, mortified and embarrassed. not for the first, nor the last time.

Moments like that are priceless.
Jimmy2 Posted September 5, 2007 Posted September 5, 2007 For a Cabernet is this not to early to drink? With out proper age it would have to taste like ass . This wine should not be drank until at least 5 to 7 years at the minimum.

Thoughts? I've tasted this once or twice, but I'm not sure of the vintages. All in all, a very good wine, but to my palate, (and this is a generalization) I find it a bit typical of bigger Cal cabs- rather oaky and a bit overextracted. But it is a nice choice when looking for a big cab.
brian1 Posted September 5, 2007 Posted September 5, 2007 Not sure about the Cab but the Cakebread Chardonnay is very good..maybe not $50 a bottle good. Like most California wine you are paying for the very high price of land in Napa Valley and off course the Cakebread name itself. Love the Aussie Syrah's and there resonable priced wines in general. Also had an amazing New Zealand chardonnay a few years back..Cloudy Bay I think. » Anyone ever had a glass or bottle of this? phxkev Posted September 5, 2007 Posted September 5, 2007 If you are ever in Rutherford, stop by the winery. I fell in love with Cakebread a long time ago. The Cakebreads are wonderful people too. I thought their Souvignon Blanc and Chardonnays were top notch but the reds really started coming along in the late 1980's. The 1987 Rutherford Reserve cab is one of the best cabs I ever drank and I drank mine in 1994. Also, try their Rubiyat if you can find it.

It really depends on the style of the wine. For a left bank bordeaux that is cab driven, they have historically taken time to drink (in the 5-7year range). New world wines, like napa cabs, have a bit more fruit up front and are actually styled to drink after only a few years. Obviously this is just a generalization and there are always exceptions
