shrink Posted August 23, 2007 Posted August 23, 2007 Past the halfway it heats up a little too much. I try to slow it down and fail with the end effect that the heat in an instant takes away the core flavours. I am nonplussed and pissed off as if someone has stolen my corkscrew. The other problem is that I am down to the band and there is no hope of recovery in such a short cigar. And there you have it... the reason why such short, stubby smokes go bad so quickly. I suppose that if you aged it for a decade or so, it might remain linear all the way to the nub. There just isn't the length for the cigar to evolve properly. I don't care how well you blend it.
anacostiakat Posted August 23, 2007 Posted August 23, 2007 This is of great interest to me as my previous experiences with these are pretty much the same. I dont think I have smoked one since '05. While looking in my inventory list I could not find the sealed box I just saw while playing tetris in the humi the other day. So I need to get it into the inventory and check the date. My recollection is '05 though.
winelover Posted August 23, 2007 Posted August 23, 2007 I really don't know where I am with the petit robusto. A couple of years back I went through a box of 04's that were incredible fresh out of the box, but then after a month or two went into a terrible sick period. Still smoked them all but longed for a cigar that would be as good as the first ( - sounds like crack-head talk!) Then last autumn I picked up a box of 3 x5's from 2004, but being late 2006, thought that perhaps the extra age would do them some favours. Unfortunately, these were the worst petit robustos I had ever had, completely harsh without flavours. These days I am reluctant to pickup a box, but knowing how good they can be, I know someday I will just to see if I can be as satisfied as I was when I first got acquainted!
VKGT Posted August 23, 2007 Posted August 23, 2007 Thank you for the review! We just picked up a box of these last week while down here in South America and have been enjoying them daily. Though I'm not a fan of this size, the flavor and taste are more than enough to make up for it
greenpimp Posted August 23, 2007 Posted August 23, 2007 I had a box when these first came out. Very good, but very frustrating. The quality of the tobacco, and even blending, was obviously first rate, but the cigar became hot in 15 minutes no matter how slowly it was smoked, no matter how often in was purged. I had the same experience with the petite Edmundo. But if you just smoke the first inch or so (like CA does) wow, what a cigar. I think the short robusto cigar size is fundamentally flawed, and wish they would stop throwing such high quality tobacco at it.
El Presidente Posted November 15, 2008 Author Posted November 15, 2008 Hoyo de Monterrey Petit Robusto SEP 06 My mother use to make me eat a chickpea soup and I use to cry like a baby as soon as I saw it being prepared on the stove. That was three weeks ago but the memories still haunt me. I have similar experiences with the Hoyo De Monterrey Petit Robusto. I have only experienced substandard thin flavoured hot burning crud. I swear whenever I enter the humidor to select a cigar for review the HDM PR box glows like Kryptonite to to point that I avoid them like a telephone call from the tax office. Then along came the latest edition of Cigar Aficionado and a ranking of 93. Initially I thought it was a misprint in that they got the numbers around the wrong way, but it was enough for me to clinch my teeth, put a hand in the SLB cab and quickly take one out for review. Good looking cigar with a shark skin wrapper which was slightly rough to the touch. Construction looks good and the smell at cold is straight tobacco with a peppermint note (warning lights flashing ) Cerrated the cap (that is why in the photo's my thumb fingernail is dirty....no hygene issues here ;-) ) and the draw was spot on. Cream and cocoa on the lips. Fired up the little bugger (I still hate this size) and am astounded by a wall of flavour. Coffee, shortbread, custard dominate the palate in a mid body which is lush and viscous. I do not know if it is the difference i tobacco being used or a difference in blend but the end result is FLAVOUR in spades. It is the lushness of the cigar which entrances. Each draw is "thick" and the flavours are delivered like a home made thick shake. They coat the tongue and the mouth and linger and linger and linger. Still coffee, shortbread and custard....still mid bodied and still delicious. Past the halfway it heats up a little too much. I try to slow it down and fail with the end effect that the heat in an instant takes away the core flavours. I am nonplussed and pissed off as if someone has stolen my corkscrew. The other problem is that I am down to the band and there is no hope of recovery in such a short cigar. I smoked it to the nub. Through the heat there were still elements of burn't caramel and I settled for that rather than pitch it out hoping against hope for the return of the aforementioned flavours. I once dated a girl in high schoool called Daniele who was an exchange student from Paris. She promised to come back too....not sure where I am going with this story. 89/100. Start was a 93.
Claudius Posted November 15, 2008 Posted November 15, 2008 Talkin' 'bout the blend, it looks like a mixture of volado and McDonald's caramel coating. :-D Chickpea has close to no taste.
Bartolomeo Posted November 8, 2009 Posted November 8, 2009 HDM Petit Robusto 2006 Gifted by a gracious member here to test, tough life I have Wrapper was a light colored Maduro, almost a Cinnamon tan, minimal veins and velvet to the touch with a hint of plume, construction was great Initial puff was tannins, spice, leather and Tapioca Flavors were nutty, earthiness, musty, leather, wood....also some chocolate wanting to peak its head out but doesn't completely Smoke time was 67 mins as I tried to smoke this slow to enjoy the benefits of the flavors in such a small size, I didnt want it to heat up and overpower the flavors Cigar was light-medium in body but flavorful Rich tasting but not heavy at all in your mouth Copious amounts of smoke with this shorty Ash was Grey, layered and flaky Breath taking, no, but this cigar was very enjoyable and a box is in my future 9.1/10 Bart

thechenman Posted November 9, 2009 Posted November 9, 2009 I've had decent experiences with the HdM Petit Robusto. They don't blow you away, but they are far from horrid in my opinion. I imagine I will be smoking more of these in the near future. I know many members of FOH take issue with the size, but a PR or PC is a good length for an outdoor smoke during Northeast winters. Yes...unfortunately, my wife makes me take my cigars outside.
CIGARHead Posted November 9, 2009 Posted November 9, 2009 Great review Rob. This is one cigar I have had zero interest in buying due to the size. I haven't even smoked one, but your review interests me. Will I buy a box?..probably not, but I am glad you liked it buddy!
