I just opened a three pack of PSD4s and one of the cigars has numerous green lines on the wrapper. Some of the lines seem to be running along the veins, but not all of them. Has anyone ever seen this? I definitely haven't.

Please don't laugh but when I first came across FOH as a newbie, I thought that the number of smoke rings was how many actual smoke rings you could blow from one puff.:-D

OK you can laugh now.

Hey Prez., thanks for the review, I'm not sure about that Batman thing, I always preferred the Green Hornet myself. I'm very glad to see this review and like the fact that these will have some aging power. Man that cigar takes a good photo!!:ok:

Partagas Serie D No 4 AGL NOV 06

I get a thrill when I get asked to try a cigar which in this case was a late 06 Partagas Serie D No 4. Part of the thrill is going past Lisa into the humidor and saying "Don't look at me like that Lise....client request :-D )

I treat those request e-mails like Batman signals in the sky......full urgent attention required. What I would give to have a pole that I could slide down from my office right into the humidor...all dressed in my cigar caped crusader suit (Black mask....lycra black suit....Cohiba Gold underwear on the outside....high cut boots....Cigar leaf shaped gold cape.....not that I have given it any thought :lookaround: )

So on a cyclonic day here in Brisbane town (screaming winds, little rain) I completed the review from my office (excuse the flash photography). Shut the door, opened a bottle of fine Barossa Shiraz and commenced my review.

Good looking cigar. Great construction and an aroma at cold of Vuelta Abajo tobacco and sweet spice.

Cerrated the cap and took a test draw. Magnificent. Some sweet spices and tobacco on the lips. I proceeded to apply a little gentle flame to the foot, sit back...watch the plumes of smoke rise to the ceiling ( I should spend more time in this thing they call ....."an office". Cobwebs on the ceiling light....mental note to advise Lisa....cancel that.....advise minismithy).

The initial draws on this D4 show immense promise. Rich, pungeant, strong, black pepper, caramelised sugar. This is as good a D4 experience that I have had. To know it is a NOV 06 is something again.

What is standing out in the opening third is the sheer lushness and full bodied nature of the cigar. Real black pepper and over roasted coffee beans on the palate but balanced by sweet paprika and sweet/sour stewed fruits. Strong yet complex. Not balanced in any real way as the cigar is a tad confused but wild and enchanting nonetheless.

Past the midpoint and this D4 has simply got better and better. Medium full in body now. If the Connoisseur No 3 were a Robusto it would be this exact cigar. Dark Roasted coffee bans, sweet stewed fruit on a stove for a millenium, hit of sweet paprika...touch of earth, tang of leather. This is without doubt one of the finer D4's I have had in years.

I am looking for negatives at this point in order to balance out the review. The burn is off....not bad....but off. The ash is flaky. But the flavour is phenomenal and holding right until the last inch when some bitterness appears to crash the palate party. It ended with a little too much black pepper and tannin for my likeing (others will love it) but I am sold.

One of the finer Robusto's I have enjoyed this year. Certainly the finest D4 and I have had some good ones. Testament to the improvement of this cigar over the past 18 months.

It just occurred to me what the foot of this PSD4 brings to mind...

The deadly whirlpool Charybdis, from the Odyssey by Homer. It had gentle eddies around its rim, but if you ventured too close, it would draw you in with its irresistible currents, sucking you down, never to escape.

Gee, could this be a coincidence?

Thanks for the review - it makes me think I should give these another shot

(after smoking a number of less than stellar 05s).

But with regard to pole dancing in tights...... sigh......
