I smoked a February 07 yesterday evening and it was a mirror experience to the October 06.

Excellent cigar and a solid 89/90.

I still can't say I like the size but I enjoyed the blend. These show real promise to become stellar cigars if what I think may occur eventuates. 12 months should see the tannins leave and a true full bodied Monte coffee and cream take over.

Had a TBS OCT 06 last night. They had been on injured reserve for the last two months. 87..Still believe like you say that another 12-18 months will cure their ills and allow the flavors to come out of hiding. Only time will tell.

I have come to really enjoy these cigars. I've had 3 thus far over the course of a couple of months, and right from the start, I was impressed. Very rich flavors, and a nice easy draw on all of them. Plenty of smoke without having to struggle for it at all. These are certainly a go-to cigar for me at the momtent, and one of only a few.

I did the same thing. They look too damn good in those pictures.

The review helped a little I guess..... ;-)

I just recieved my latest copy of CA and they claim this is the greatest cigar produced in Cuba today. I think it does have some long haul potential but that claim is ludicrous. I was pleased to see many cuban cigars rated very highly this time around.

Just for the sake of conversation, I buy the mag every now and again - mainly for the cover articles.

I bought the newest for the Branson interview. I pay little attention to the cigar review pages.

As an aside, my significant other questioned how such a big, glossy mag can cost only $5......

I agree with you 100% about their review system. Speaking of the Branson interview which I have not read yet, I met a guy selling cigars outside a Rolling Stones Concert in Florida several years ago. We started talking and I could see the anger build up as we discussed CA's lastest reviews. All political BS he screamed. His family came from Cuba and the cigar industry in particular. Long story short it was then I discovered that you can take the reviews with a grain of salt!! More humor than anything else. You have another good point about the price! I never thought of it that way! By the way that gentleman I met still sends me smokes from time to time. They are better than anything you can buy in the US stores including Padron.

» how much different is the blend of these than the regular edmundos? or

Of late Bruce they appear to be significantly fuller in body than the larger Edmundo.

Prior to recent examples I have found them to be all over the place in terms of consitency but a mini Edmundo they are not.

Out of my latest box of 10, two were great and on so-so. BTW, also dated OCT 06.

I have smoked 2 with consistant problems. I do believe that they are in the "sick" period. All I can taste is ammonia. I let them lay for a while, forgot about them, and now tried 2 in as many months. Both boxes are from 06. Now, I did have 1 in London, and loved it. So I know what they can be like.

I was stunned to see that Cigar Aficionado reviewers gave it a 94

From the deep reddish brown color (they forgot the "u") to the perfect 3 seam cap, this cigar exhibits model construction. A Lush, full draw envelopes the palate with cocoa bean, sweet earth and pleasant floral notes that leave a long nutty finish

Box Date October 2006

Having some excellent looking examples from the same Box Code I thought it an opportune time to try this cigar I have been hugely disappointed with over the past six months. In my mind they have become progressively worse with the most offensive examples having a paper and grass profile.

Then again I read Strayvectors review on 17/1/2007

The flavors detected started out as a distinct slightly sweetened dark coffee with a spicy undertone. Midway, got some very nice chocolate and leather undertones and the cigar finished with some creaminess that reminded me of a creamy latte. The spicy undertone was present throughout the cigar. According to Brian, he said that this cigar reminded him of old-school Monte flavors. It never got bitter and it was definitely a finger-burner. I couldn't put it down. Really, quite an incredible smoke for such a young cigar. My only complaint is that was just too short. It only took 35 minutes to finish the bugger. The use of aged leaves certainly shows with how little harshness this smoke exhibited.

Now his review follows the same line as Cigar Aficionado. So what in hell have I been experiencing over the past 180 days?

The Petit Edmundo looks the goods:

Construction is top class. Smell at cold is a mix of sweet tobacco and sweaty football socks.

Clipped the cap and the draw was perfect requiring the slightest of pulls.

Fired up the foot and it was immediately apparent the MPE was a little powerhouse. Intense white pepper through the nose. Medium full indark roasted coffee beans and a huge lick of tannin on the palate.

Chewy, meaty....strong. Some cream notes evident but the Tannin is masking any subtler nuances. Loads of coffee.

Progressing nicely but the cigar is unbalanced. Tannins need to dissipate which will no doubt happen ove the coming year or two. Core of dark roasted coffee beans is the key delight. The aroma is all cocoa....very distinct as if someone were making a hot chocolate next door. I wonder if this is a hint to the future development of this cigar. Right now however the cocoa notes fail to make an impact on the palate...it is there in the background but the Tannin is keeping it at bay.

The MPE is getting stronger. Freshly worked leather now going blow for blow with the dark roasted coffee and tannin. Full bodied cigar at this time and nearly down to the band. Very enjoyable. Black pepper appearing toward the end. Spicy, has attitude.

My apologies to Cigar Aficionado. The Montecristo Petit Edmundo is not a 94 by any scale but this cigar was a solid 89/90 with the potential to be a great if it loses a significant proportion of the tannin and evolves those cocoa highlights into a rich decadent lush mix.

I am going to now try a 2007 MPE and see if this is a "one off" hit or a consistent trait. Will post a follow up.
