skid11 Posted July 27, 2007 Posted July 27, 2007 Sorry about the short notice but I noticed a Documentary on Cuba tonite at 8.30pm SBS............... "As it Happened" "Learn the previously untold story of Cuba's support for African revolutions. This documentary unravels the story of the so-called Cold War through the prism of its least known arena: Africa. Against colonialism, capitalism, and communism, the newly independent nations attempted for the first time to gain real control of their own countries. From Che Guevara's military campaign to avenge Lumumba in the Congo, up to the fall of apartheid in South Africa, 300,000 Cubans fought alongside African revolutionaries."
habanablue Posted July 27, 2007 Posted July 27, 2007 Great piece, I saw Blood Diamond the other day and this fills in sme gaps regarding South Africa's involvement in Angola and Namibia. You can easily see how colonialism and the latter meddling of Super Powers and their agents has screwed most of Africa and why civil unrest etc still exisits. Don't bite my head off if you disagree, as I do ackowledge that much of Africa's problems could be classified as completely internal, howver I believe that most of it has come about due to external powers wanting a piece of teh 'pie' so to speak. Absolutely cracked me up when the Cuban guy who knew he was kicking arse at the negotiation table concientiously brought a cigar into the discussion room to 'celebrate':-D
El Presidente Posted July 27, 2007 Posted July 27, 2007 Watched last weeks episode and was enthralled. Makes all African Governments out to be incompetent, greedy, psychotic personal empires. Why is it the minute anyone became president, the first thing they did was don a Generals uniform with dark sunglasses and a chest full of medals
JMH Posted July 27, 2007 Posted July 27, 2007 » Why is it the minute anyone became president, the first » thing they did was don a Generals uniform with dark sunglasses and a chest » full of medals Yes, why is that, El Presidente? ;-)
skid11 Posted July 28, 2007 Author Posted July 28, 2007 HI Habanablue Wow.................. I had no idea as to the extent of Cuba's involvement in African politics and as a military force they can kicked arse big time. Yes it was amusing to see one of the cuban diplomats pacing the corridors looking for a cigar to light up. I've got a copy of Blood diamond that I haven't watched yet so thanks for the heads up, I'm sure it will add a few aha's to the storyline.
