havanaclub7 Posted July 22, 2007 Posted July 22, 2007 I'm probably going to get my dad a box of tubed cigars that he can take on his fishing trip in a month or two. He does have a humidor, but I don't know if he really wants to drag it along with him. He also tends to give a lot of them away, so I'm not looking to spend a lot of money on something like a Romeo y Julieta Churchill. I'm thinking something more along the lines of the Punch Coronations or the Romeo y Julieta No. 2s - but I'm definitely open to suggestions. What is smoking good that's in tubes but is also reasonably priced? Thanks for your recommendations!

You can't go wrong with Monte Petit Tubos (a Monte 4 in tubes) Hoyo Coronations are great for a tubed cigar with a mild flavor The Bolivar Tubo #3 is a fabulous, strong, small tubo Those are some of my favorites. I am a tubo fiend.

rafa Posted July 22, 2007 Posted July 22, 2007 In my humble opinion cigars in tube aren't good for smoking immediately. I usually reutilize tubes when i travel, with cigars that has been dreaming in humidor for a long time
winelover Posted July 22, 2007 Posted July 22, 2007 » » You can't go wrong with Monte Petit Tubos (a Monte 4 in tubes) Second that (& great for l.t. ageing). Just wish I could get a box without paying UK prices. The monte tubos seem readily available but not the petit tubos.
habanohal Posted July 22, 2007 Posted July 22, 2007 As I have found out ( and Rob stated) Monty tubes can be the worst and Boli tubes the best. Found out after purchaseing, and you cant go wrong with the Bolivar Tubes
tigger Posted July 22, 2007 Posted July 22, 2007 Can you give us an idea of what he likes to smoke in general? Without knowing that, I'd have to go with the Montes as others have suggested. Whatever you get, unless they have quite a bit of age on them, you might consider uncapping them and letting them sit in your humidor for a little while. I find that young tubos tend to be pretty amoniay (pronounce that uh-moan-ya-ee). I wouldn't suggest this if you had long-term plans for them, but for smoking in the next few months, it might make sense.

Tigger, He mostly smokes non-Cubans and I think he tends to go with more mild or medium bodied smokes. I know he likes Astral Cameroons quite a bit, if that helps your recommendations at all. Thanks for the suggestion about uncapping the tubes too. When I've bought tubed cigars, I just unpack them from the tube altogether and put them in my humidor.

PartagasIV Posted July 22, 2007 Posted July 22, 2007 I will go ahead and second/third? the recommendation for the Bolis...I have limited experience with tubos but I have had some crackerjack Boli #2's covered in bloom.

You'd probably be even better off taking them all the way out of the tubes for awhile. Just more of a hassle getting them put back together. Bolis seem to me a bit full for his tastes. More learned opinions than mine may differ with all of that though.
Professor Twain Posted July 23, 2007 Posted July 23, 2007 I wouldn't bother with all of the uncapping, taking them out of the tubes, etc. Not sure that will make much of a difference. I have never done that. But if that works for others, great. Giving someone a Cuban tubo makes it really special, they can keep the tube and always remember it. And I agree that the Bolis are very strong and bold and not as good for beginners. Another idea--buy a mixture of tubos as singles. Part Monte, part Hoyo, and a small part Boli. Let him sample the range.
trumpetchris Posted July 29, 2007 Posted July 29, 2007 If you can make up the difference in price, buy untubed cigars and put them in a travel humi for him. Then you can go with something that will be good OTT, like PSD4 or Diplo4, etc. The tubes don't keep them that humidified, IMO, and you'd give him a present he can keep forever (in the travel humi). 15-30 ct travel humis can be had for 30 dollars.
