Ethernut Posted July 17, 2007 Posted July 17, 2007 Do you ever get bored early in a smoke, put your stick out and find another? This seems to happen to me about 30-40 percent of the time. All the while I'm thinking I just thew away 5-20 dollars. But it just seems to not be worth it to tough it out through a boring stick. I smoke for the enjoyment of it, always looking for good flavor, something compelling. I couldn't care less about nicotine hit or power. After having great cigars I'm always so disappointed when I reach for a certain cigar and it does not deliver. What were your last few boring sticks? Tonight I had a Monte #4 it was real woody and peppery, not the creamyness that I've experienced in times past. I reached for it because I wanted a cream bomb at that moment. That particular stick just wasn't up to the task even though the #4 is one of my favorites. So I got through the first third of the #4, extinguished it, and went to the Humi and picked out an Upmann Con 1. I hadnt had one yet so, I guess I was just looking for a new experience. The Connie 1 didn't want to stay lit and had some weird burn issues but I fought through the first 3rd again and it seemed to go down hill from there So I ran out of time, time for bed, in the back of my mind I'm thinking I should have fired up another CoRo or a Monte #2. :-D I thought I'd hop on here and whine like a little baby. ;-) When you're looking for the cream bomb, what do you reach for? Ether..
El Presidente Posted July 17, 2007 Posted July 17, 2007 Smoking a Monte 4 currently. Perfect Monte 4. However I think we all know what you have experienced. I don't tolerate crap cigars. I will toss a poor cigar quickly at or before the first third mark and reach for a favourite (unless I am reviewing). One cigar that is creamy and full of coffee notes that has NEVER let me down....never, ever, ever is the Trinidad Reyes. They are never far away.
genevapics Posted July 17, 2007 Posted July 17, 2007 I understand you completely when you talk about reaching for a cigar for that certain flavor profile. Many times I have desired a (fill-in-the-blank) taste and come up with something completely different. As long as the cigar tastes good, I will stick with it. While I might not be getting what I expected, as long as the cigar rewards me with a good taste/smoke it will remain in my hand. If, however, the cigar won't burn correctly or has a tight draw, I will be pitched into the Stinky and I will reach for another cigar. Rarely will I reach for the same cigar... I almost always pick something different. I chalk it up to, "It's Cuba.":-D
88keys Posted July 17, 2007 Posted July 17, 2007 Know how you feel. I usually only buy stuff I've loved in the past, but sometimes you get a dud. My last was a PSD#4 that had the loose draw, burned hot and tasted like empty smoke. I did want something else but I saw dollar signs and stuck with it, hoping it would improve and wondering whether the whole rest of the box would be the same. Luckily, the next one a few days later was much better. Things that won't draw, though, I tend to give up on. I have some Hoyo Epicure #1s from the bad old days which are a crapshoot -- they're great if they draw. Another situation is that every once in a while I'll still give things a try even though I know I don't really like them. Tonight it was a Bolivar Petit Corona. I'm just not a Bolivar fan. No doubt it's a good cigar, but I let it go early. My immediate free association with "cream bomb" was "Sir Winston".

They are never far away. I've written about this on other boards. Life is too short to smoke even a mediocre cigar. I smoke for flavor and enjoyment. If the cigar has any hints of harshness or flatness I pitch it. I don't care what it is, it gets tossed. I also will always reach for a Trini Reyes in a pinch. It's been my go to smoke since release. If I was limited to one regular production readily available cigar to smoke forever, it would be the Reyes.
anacostiakat Posted July 17, 2007 Posted July 17, 2007 I pitch cigars whenever I feel I have given them a chance and I have reached the point of no return. I just go get another one. Occasionally I am disappointed with the second drawing as well. But not often. I will revisit the same cigars at a later date or at intervals to see if they improve.
bobsled Posted July 17, 2007 Posted July 17, 2007 I too have had the same experience with a few sticks. Most recent for me was an exhibicion 4. It was just blah. Tossed it and lit a reyes. :-)
Professor Twain Posted July 17, 2007 Posted July 17, 2007 Funny, I never thought about it, but I never pitch a cigar unless I have smoked at least 2/3 of it--unless is terrible and bitter (like the Guantanamero I tried). I think I have internalized the "clean your plate" mentality I learned when young. I don't mind giving away expensive cigars, but the idea of "wasting" one by pitching it just doesnt' suit me. Maybe I will reconsider that habit.
Colt45 Posted July 17, 2007 Posted July 17, 2007 It happened to me this past weekend with a Montecristo No.2 - poor draw, poor burn, poor taste. It wasn't worth the effort, and was pitched after an inch and half or so.
SmokinLightning Posted July 17, 2007 Posted July 17, 2007 Last week with a recent Cohiba Siglo II. Muted, flat flavors. The rest will sit for a good long while before I try another.
smokum Posted July 17, 2007 Posted July 17, 2007 Same here...I dont wait long. I toss them. I don't have all day to get what I want out of my cigar. One day last week I pitched a Sig IV and a LaPunta. I thought it was me so I went to one of the old reliables....a Punch Corona .
