Ken Gargett Posted July 6, 2007 Posted July 6, 2007 Picked this as keen for something good for the amazingly courageous State of Origin loss. First from the 06 cab. They look great though this one selected as the runt of the litter. Get it out of the way as it were. The wrapper was starting to come a little loose and the thing actually had a bit of a bend in it. Not quite boomerang-like but noticeable. In the end, neither impacted adversely at all. Kicked off, big, spicy, dense, richly flavoured. Classic powerful notes. A good slow draw, even a little tight, but hard to fault at this stage as still so youthful. That said, amazingly approachable (think Rob has mentioned this). They might be singing now but they have an enormous future ahead of them. Intense and balanced. The first half was a bit of a settler but by the second half, the flavours kicked in. Rich, complex, spicy, balanced (surprisingly well balanced for such a young smoke). No harshness at all. Powerful and left a good buzz. A magic cigar ad look out for the next 5, 10, 20 years. Loved it. After the first half, was thinking around 92-93 but by the end, 95-96. A great 2 ½ hours plus smoke! Had it with a Ron Caney Anejo Centuria rum from Cuba. An aged rum - citrus flavoured with smoky tones. Seriously good and a great match. As was the game, even if justice not done.
bassman Posted July 6, 2007 Posted July 6, 2007 Sounds like it might be time to try another. I smoked a SEP 06 in January & wasn't overly impressed- yet. Love the 02s & 04s though. Never been lucky enough to try one of the fabled 01s.:crying:
Mike33 Posted July 6, 2007 Posted July 6, 2007 Great review Ken! I have enjoyed around a half-dozen or so from my '06 cab. They are developing remarkably fast; I can't wait to try one in another 4 or 5 years.

Never been lucky » enough to try one of the fabled 01s.:crying: think i'm down to just one left of the 01's. what great smokes they were. i have probably told this before but the first time i saw them was when rob put them on at one of his much missed cigar dinners. they didn't get a huge response from most there - i have no idea why. i remember the ash going for more than half the cigar on mine (some one has photos somewhere) which for a DC is not bad. i thought them terrific but rob could not move them. he had them on at $40 a stick at the time. obviously didn't have many. as he couldn't sell them, he was flogging them for half price. i grabbed a bundle but wish i'd grabbed every single one he had (though with the numbers back then, probably wasn't far short).
stever Posted July 7, 2007 Posted July 7, 2007 Nice review. I really like the late '06s I've had so far. Any word on the '07s?
Ken Gargett Posted July 7, 2007 Author Posted July 7, 2007 » Nice review. » » I really like the late '06s I've had so far. Any word on the '07s? i've heard nothing yet and not seen them. i know in the past that there has been usually only one release of these a year and that is normally around november. now that they are becoming far more popular, though i think a lot of that comes down to this forum and that beyond here, they are still hard to move (rob could be more specific), there might be more than one batch a year.
shrink Posted July 7, 2007 Posted July 7, 2007 Compelling review, Ken. I've nothing younger than '05s. Do you have the boxdate on those 2006?
Professor Twain Posted July 7, 2007 Posted July 7, 2007 Haven't had the DC but the Churchills are very much to my liking. A cab of these sounds like a good investment.
Ken Gargett Posted July 7, 2007 Author Posted July 7, 2007 » Haven't had the DC but the Churchills are very much to my liking. » » A cab of these sounds like a good investment. went through all but a couple from a box of churchills (put a couple in deep storage) and enjoyed them. found an amazing degree of variation in the box from decidely average to very good. but the SLR's are a quantum leap up, i have always found. if i had to take just one regular production cigar to the proverbial desert island, it would be this or siglo vi, which i also love but i think that this would definitely win. just love them. everyone makes for its own special occasion.
Ginseng Posted July 7, 2007 Posted July 7, 2007 Compelling review of a legendary cigar. Thank you, Ken. Having smoked the Churchills recently, I'm very interested in trying the two DC's I have on hand. Wilkey

Thank you, Ken. » » Having smoked the Churchills recently, I'm very interested in trying the » two DC's I have on hand. » » Wilkey wilkey, i really think you are bang on calling them legendary cigars (i've done likewise on posts elewhere in this forum) but what i find fascinating is that we have only seen a few years worth. what will the thoughts be when we have a decade or two behind us. i firmly believe, provided havana maintains it standards with these, that they will truly be legendary in every ense of the word and i think, as mentioned above, this forum accounts for a fair % of them. when the rest of the world works out what they are missing, they'll be hard to find. interestingly, none of my mates in havana have ever seen them there. seems that they are export only. i wonder if rob could find out approx figures of production and just where they are sold.
stever Posted July 7, 2007 Posted July 7, 2007 I've got a few from another '06 box code that I need to try. I'll try to do so in the next few days and post my impressions. Maybe a photo or two also?

Maybe a photo or two also? My box from '06 are the perfect double corona. Complex as can be to keep you interested the entire time. I hate when you smoke a DC and it's one dimensional to the point that you'd be better off eating hard candy for 2 hours. These are going to be greats!
shrink Posted July 9, 2007 Posted July 9, 2007 I broke into my '05 cab and fired up the first one since the original I sampled. I was very pleased with how these are coming along. The first couple inches were fully medium-bodied, with lots of classic SLR spices, and some peppery notes, which bodes well for further development. This resolved into a less full-bodied, but toasty smoke with a bittersweet fermented quality and a lightly sweetened, savory finish that smacked of dried apricots. This was the most flavorful, and most satisfying part of the cigar. The last third was mildly spicy, but lost the fruity apricot quality. It actually became bland as it neared the band, so I called it good, and put it out. Another couple of years, and these will join their predecessors as legendary habanos. Bravo!

Ken Gargett Posted July 21, 2007 Author Posted July 21, 2007 just had another during that abhorent bledisloe. at least something great for the night.
xibbumbero Posted July 21, 2007 Posted July 21, 2007 I've not cracked my 06 cab. My 04's ain't ready by a long shot so's I figgered my 06's weren't either. I may have to give one a go. I sure wish I could find Ron Caney in Mexico but I don't believe they import it. X
