connoiseur29
Impeccable dark brown, smooth wrapper and even coat of bloom as it has been sitting with its other siblings at the bottom of the humidor for some time now. This cigar was from the first release, 2004. Smell at cold was coffee bean and cedar. Slow even ignition and vanilla bean and espresso leapt from the smoke. Rich and abundant smoke. Enough to satisfy the entire terrace and its occupants overlooking the city at sunset for a full 2 and a half hours. To accompany it was a double of jack daniels (neat), an appropriate choice for this city and, as it turns out, for this cigar. It was a full symphony of cohiba flavors, grass, cocoa, roasted nuts, cinnamon, espresso, vanilla bean, and toasted cedar gradually building up in a crescendo with subtle peaks and troughs in the various flavors throughout the smoke. The first third was predominantly vanilla bean and coffee. The middle third approximated roasted nuts, dark bitter chocolate and a hint of coffee and the final third predominated with cocoa, cohiba grassiness, cedar and a touch of nutmeg and cinnamon. Reached the nub and gently laid the final tobacco strands to rest. A nice glass of water cooled my palate after such an intense experience and to be honest, one that created total clarity of thought, relaxation and, as it's name explicitly states, a sublime state. Unfortunately, only 5 more remain buried deep in the humidor (away from any of my friends' and colleagues' sights). But, IMHO, this cigar was smooth, powerful and opulent. At the end of the evening, the wife could barely detect the scent, as it burned so cleanly. It was a world class smoke to celebrate a very significant day in my career. My score: 97 There are very few cigars that would match and/or beat this smoke today and in 5 to 10 years time or longer.
Ken Gargett
fantastic to read. have not had one for a while. had a few singles i picked up in havana but the boxes put in deep deep storage as i remember thinking that these were for the extremely long haul. gave them the same score though. perhaps i should pull one out. you mention 5 or 10 years. do you see them improving much? i remember thinking that there was so much too them that even though they were terrific, they did need lots of time, though that was a couple of years ago. and congrats on the significant day but you didn't tell us what? Well Armed
I wish these were smaller but then they wouldn't probably be so damn good. The blend is incredible. Solid high 90+ score on every one I have had. I wish I would have boughten more before.
connoiseur29
Ken, Do you know that honey flavor profile frequently described in the '01 Cohiba robustos? I think the flavor profile is going to become a bit sweeter in addition to what is already there and maybe just a bit more mild over the next 5-10 years. It's hard to improve much when you are already in the high 90s. I do think it will go down as one of the best havanas to have been produced this decade. We're splitting hairs by that point, as to how close to perfection it can approach.
brian1
Nice review of a wonderful cigar. One of my all time favorites. Just about impossible to find now as these are being bought up in anticipation of the classics they are destined to become.
Mel
I like these too but could not quite give them 95+ scores. Yet!
anacostiakat
Nice review! The sublime and the DC EL are my favorites. I think I too have a couple singles in the drawer.
