KB24 Posted June 17, 2007 Posted June 17, 2007 Anyone ever been there? How as it and is it considered in downtown Cabo? I am headed there in August for my 1 Year Anniversary and am very excited to have some smokes I haven't had yet. Any information is appreciated. -Patrick
rjfunk Posted June 17, 2007 Posted June 17, 2007 Patrick, I have been there. It is actually J&J Cigars (subtitled LCdH). You will not be disappointed. Good thing it isn't your typical LCdH. I tend to find most of them pretty sterile. This place has plenty of Mexican flavor and hospitality. There is a full stock of all types Habanos. When I was there they had a good supply of limited editions (last April). At that time, they were opening up a tequila bar down the street. Ask them about it. It was supposed to have a cigar lounge too. The guys at J&J were nice and friendly and did speak english so you should be all set. They had a lot of other interesting merchandise too. I think you'll be please what you find. It is dowtown Cabo where all the shops are. Easy to to find. It is down one of the side streets. Enjoy! P.S. I'm from San Pedro, CA.
KB24 Posted June 17, 2007 Author Posted June 17, 2007 I am going to be staying at the Pueblo Bonita Sunset Beach Resort in Cabo and I just looked and found out they have their own Cigar Bar. I can't get too much information on it but wonder if it is legit like J&J is. One would figure a Cigar Bar at a 4 Star Resort would be Legit? Thoughts? -Patrick
puros71 Posted June 17, 2007 Posted June 17, 2007 Dude only buy from J&J's, they are the only authized LCDH. Place is loaded with fakes. Your in Mexico so I see no problem just firing up.
motownflip Posted June 17, 2007 Posted June 17, 2007 I go every year to cabo. I have a timeshare there. J & J did open up a new spot that has a good size humi. I think it's called mojitos. I stay at a 5 star resort there and the cigars that are there are questionable and are never at idea temps/humidity. J&J's is the only spot to buy real cubans at. Unfortunately, they pay 100% in taxes (says the owner of J&J's), so the prices are steep. $42 for a siglo VI tubo. Seriously. Cabo is one of favorite places. Enjoy!
KB24 Posted June 17, 2007 Author Posted June 17, 2007 $42 for a siglo VI tubo. I'd be better off bringing my own. Thanks for the information. I will go to J&J's the 1st day and buy my smokes for the trip. Thanks again. -Patrick
stargazer14 Posted February 20, 2010 Posted February 20, 2010 I just wanted to bump this thread up - staying to Cabos for a few days in March before heading to a beach house in Los Barriles. Have been reading up on the cigar situation there and everyone says only buy from J&J or Hemmingways(same owner). If anyone has been to Cabos since this thread opened (2007!) please feel free to update! Heading for stay with family and friends for my 50th(was in Nov) for fishing, smokes, drink and....
sepp Posted February 21, 2010 Posted February 21, 2010 If you plan on smoking a lot of your daily smokes, bring your own. They will cost you a lot less and you are sure of their past. Then you can save your money to fill in with some really nice ELs or Regionals from JJs if they have some tasty treats.
stargazer14 Posted February 21, 2010 Posted February 21, 2010 Yes, was planning on BYOC, but its always nice to splurge on something different and make a purchase. Want to buy a smoke and have a nice tequila in Hemmingways too. But I'd also like to grab a new smoke for the beach house. ..and maybe some cuban rum too...
tucomapache Posted February 21, 2010 Posted February 21, 2010 J ad J is strill a great place. I usually buy my smokes go accross the street to Cabo Wabo and spark up a Montie #2 and party away.

toasterhead Posted February 22, 2010 Posted February 22, 2010 ...Reporting live from Cabo San Lucas, I'm Toasterhead... I am sorry to report that Hemmingway's is CLOSED. As in shuttered, dark, kaput. I had not been back here for 2 years and was looking forward to a mojito in the lounge with an aged Lancero. I walked around the corner to J and J but no dice, closed on Sunday. I will investigate further today and fill in the details. I have noticed a lot of vacancies in the downtown area and suspect the economic downturn is being felt even here. Dave
stargazer14 Posted February 22, 2010 Posted February 22, 2010 wow, the website still is running, hope its a temp thing. Thanks for the update, will remember to bering a few extra cigars in case. And if you have extra smokes you cant bring back - just hide them somewhere, i'll pick the up when i arrive!!
toasterhead Posted February 23, 2010 Posted February 23, 2010 Ok here's the deal... J and J is alive and well with a very nice selection. I purchased a few nice treats; VR Classico 1999, Cohiba Lancero 2001, Dip #1 2000, and Monte Especiales and Trini Fundadores, both 1998. Everything in the humidor was perfectly kept and most everything had a nice plume. No Cohiba Riserva but I did see Sublime 2004. A few other LEs but no REs were present. The economic downturn last year, along with the swine flu scare, really whacked all of Mexico, including Cabo. Hemingway's went under about 8 months ago. All they need at J and J would be a bigger lounge area (you are welcome to smoke at a few small tables and taste exotic tequilas) and mojitos and it would be about the same. Stop in and support them if you are coming to Cabo. Dave
StumpyJoe Posted February 23, 2010 Posted February 23, 2010 Hi All, I was in Cabo last November. Heard the same thing while I was there...swine flu and all the violence in Mexico was seriously hurting the tourist trade and Cabo was not immune. Hemingways/LCDH...located across the street from Cabo Wabo was closed...but as has been previously posted J&J's is owned by the same person and located near there. Nice staff and they do have a selection of Cuban Rums as well. Cigars are pricey but well kept. Very friendly and relaxed atmosphere. I had heard of the high tobacco tax rate so I brought several of my own and only bought at J&J's. I've never seen so many fakes in my life. I went to several nice cigar shops where they had Cohibas in their boxes...individually wrapped in cellophane. Have a great time in Cabo, Mike.
stargazer14 Posted March 4, 2010 Posted March 4, 2010 Thanks guys - Toast, I was just going to ask if there were any Mexican RE's to look for, but I guess the answer, at least there, is 'no'. Headed down on the 12th, I'll report back on the Baja cigar situation in a few weeks! Sorry to hear Hemingways is closed, looked like a nice spot. And as far as 'swine' - thats the reason I am going! We got an awesome deal on a beach house about 6months ago because of the scare. Living like a king on the surf of East Cape for about $300/week. You will see me in the pool - cigar in one hand, surf rod in the other, waiting for the roosterfish to swim by.....

The Edmundo Dantes Conde 109 is a RE for Mexico...rare and hard to come by, but if you find them, scoop them up.
stargazer14 Posted March 4, 2010 Posted March 4, 2010 "The Edmundo Dantes Conde 109 is a RE for Mexico...rare and hard to come by, but if you find them, scoop them up." I'll grab one for everybody. If someone wants 2, speak up.
toasterhead Posted March 4, 2010 Posted March 4, 2010 Sorry my bad; I did see at least 2 boxes of Edmundo Dantes there at J and J's. Didn't examine the box codes but I bought some there in Jan 2008 (original release $40 each) and wouldn't be surprised if they still existed. Have a great time! Dave
stargazer14 Posted March 5, 2010 Posted March 5, 2010 I sent them a mail and they said they did have both the original and new release of the Edmundo Dantes. $50ea. or you can buy a box for....you don't want to know. I may grab a stick for my RE collection and one to smoke cuz i'm feeling like a king. A poor king, but a king.

Since they have both the '07 and '08 for the same price, I would suggest you go with the original release.
cgarner Posted March 5, 2010 Posted March 5, 2010 I would love to try an 07 Edmundo Dante, but not for $50 a stick. wow.
stargazer14 Posted March 6, 2010 Posted March 6, 2010 Correction! Price is $32 per stick. Taxes are high in Mexico. I was doing too many things at once. I'm gonna grab a few, if any should need one, let me know.
