genevapics Posted December 29, 2005 Posted December 29, 2005 I'd suggest the Woodford Reserve. I believe it is about $29 US here in Delaware. Very good and smooth. I like it over ice and as yet have not had it straight up.
Ken Gargett Posted December 29, 2005 Posted December 29, 2005 never was - used to think that stuff was just a vile wannabee serious drink. then got a bottle of the woodford reserve and a new world opened. seriously good stuff. that bottle came from batch 1. i have tried it quite a few times since then and still love it but i have never thought any were as good as the batch 1. just about thru a bottle from batch 3. about $60 here. it remains my favourite bourbon tho i am much more in favour of good rum. also slowly working through a few others and some small bottles assorted. have a bottle of evan williams 1994 single barrel that i haven't tried - anyone familiar? also a JD silver series single barrel tennessee whiskey. with rums, i probably have 20-30 different bottles, majority cuban but a few aussie and some mixed carribean. if rob ever finds out where i live, i'm screwed.
Shooter Posted December 29, 2005 Posted December 29, 2005 If I run out of Maker's Mark I feel like I'm out of milk in the house.:-| As I write this though I'm sipping some Woodford's Reserve and will say it's clearly smoother still. I also enjoy Basil Hayden's very much too! Bourbon? YES!:-P
jon1481 Posted December 29, 2005 Posted December 29, 2005 I've had all the boubon that you have tried. I seem to have settled on Knob Creek as my go to boubon. It never disappoints, always delivers what a bourbon should be. IMHO ;-) ..........jon
Loki Posted December 30, 2005 Author Posted December 30, 2005 Ken, What can be said that hasn't been already about this pour. I've been sampling this bourbon since its first 1990 vintage bottling (1999). It seems like it gets better every year. I really enjoy the consistent hard rock candy flavors. Ever try chewing your bourbon, Ken?
n-tron Posted January 6, 2006 Posted January 6, 2006 I've been enjoying a bottle of Eagle Rare. My first try with this brand but it won't be the last.
Loki Posted January 7, 2006 Author Posted January 7, 2006 » I've been enjoying a bottle of Eagle Rare. My first try with this brand but » it won't be the last. Hmm. Never heard of it. Who produces it? I'm always interested in a new pour.

sleeper Posted January 7, 2006 Posted January 7, 2006 Elmer T. Lee and 10+ year Old Weller are a couple more great Kentuckys. I like my Bourbon, but almost any aged, small batch, yellow to brown shaded liquor is tasty. As above, aged rye whisky's are also very nice.
novasurf Posted January 7, 2006 Posted January 7, 2006 I received Eagle Rare 10 year old for Christmas. It is very smooth. And a nice flavor. Do try it, Loki.
waldo Posted January 7, 2006 Posted January 7, 2006 Makers uses wheat instead of rye in their mash. You can really taste it too.:-(
jwrussell Posted January 9, 2006 Posted January 9, 2006 » Makers uses wheat instead of rye in their mash. You can really taste it » too.:-( I enjoy Knob creek, but I'm not a real Bourbon guy so...
novasurf Posted January 14, 2006 Posted January 14, 2006 Eagle Rare, Pappy 20, Pappy 15, Elmer T Lee....all under the Christmas tree.
Loki Posted January 14, 2006 Author Posted January 14, 2006 » Eagle Rare, Pappy 20, Pappy 15, Elmer T Lee....all under the Christmas » tree. Great gifts Norman. The wife must really love you.
korryp Posted January 14, 2006 Posted January 14, 2006 Evan Williams Single Barrel and Makers Mark when I drink bourbon. Most of the time it's tequlia.
col.dylan Posted January 19, 2006 Posted January 19, 2006 i keep a few bourbons and whiskey around the house Makers Mark Gentleman Jack Trukey Old Charter nothing real special.........usually keep a couple high end scotches
Fatshotbud Posted January 19, 2006 Posted January 19, 2006 » Bourbon the only spirit concocted in the good ol' USA. » » I been drinking the following as of late: » » Woodford Reserve » » Evan Williams Single Barrel various years. » » Bookers (high octane) » » Makers Mark (old standby » » » I usually enjoy these neat but have been known to ice em down one in a » while. Simply put -- Yes. But only with a cigar :-P
mr.harten Posted January 20, 2006 Posted January 20, 2006 Can't get enough of the stuff... Maker's Mark, Knob Creek, & Bulleit are my favorites served "on the rocks". Any of you Maker's Mark drinkers registered as an Ambassador? It's free to sign-up (via their website) and you get lots of cool stuff throughout the year as well as the opportunity to have your name on a barrel.
jjwright Posted January 20, 2006 Posted January 20, 2006 Elijah Craig 12yr old, Wild Turkey Russell's Reserve, Booker's and Evan William's single barrel.

I took your advice and bought a bottle, not too bad at $29. Poured three fingers over some ice sat back with a BBF and relaxed. Nice and smooth. Hope to see you in NYC
Wiley Posted February 3, 2006 Posted February 3, 2006 Not a huge bourbon drinker, but I did go through a bottle of Buffalo Trace that I liked a lot.
Loki Posted March 5, 2006 Author Posted March 5, 2006 » I am a long time Bourbon drinker. Scotch phooey. Maybe I have a poor man's palate. It's all about your own personal taste. My friend at the liquor store gave me a sample of the newer bulliet bourbon. I reported back to him that this stuff was tasteless. He said that some of his customers thought that it was good. He decided not to add it to his regular stock.
cigardawg Posted March 5, 2006 Posted March 5, 2006 Big bourbon fan here. My everyday drinking bourbons are Buffalo Trace, Elijah Craig 12yr, and Bakers 8yr. Among my favorites are: AH Hirsch 16yr (my absolute favorite so far) Pappy Van Winkle 20yr Family Reserve (a close second) Classic Cask 13yr Blanton's Single Barrel Black Maple Hill 14yr ......and the list goes on. I have a bottle of the 2005 whiskey of the year, George T. Stagg Barrel Proof that I have not yet cracked. Waiting for the right time to do that. I have also had the pleasure of tasting the Classic Cask 20yr...phenomenal bourbon.

It seems the farther you are away from good ole' Kentucky the harder it is to find the smaller production bourbons if at all. I see from Lisa's thread that you are involved with agility. I would like to put one of my bull terriers into agility one day.
SeanGAR Posted March 6, 2006 Posted March 6, 2006 Drove past a bunch of the distilleries in kentucky a couple of weeks ago. Anybody visit any of them? I'm thinking if they are cigar friendly that a bourbon tour might be interesting.
