H. Upmann Magnum 46.....has anyone had a good one of mid to late 2006 production?

I fired one up yesterday afternoon late as I was working away.

Started bitter, had no presence, flat in flavour....dirty...dirty undertones. The burn was crap, the draw acceptable. Little pepper through the nose and yet acrid and tannic on the tongue.

Seriously a **** house cigar.

Will take one from another box this week and see if it was a one off.

Sounds just like the Magnum's that I had from 2005. Never went back to try any from 06.

Well,my cab is ROA-ENE06 and they're outstanding.. Even better than my SLB box of 03. Mebbe they used up all the good tabaccy on my cab. X :-D

pretty much all of the upmanns we tried in cuba disappointed. it is one cigar that i really think that does need at least 18 months, if the ones i have had previously are anything to go by. waste of time till then.

My only experience with these until recently was with a fiver from Nov 05, and I thought they were complete ****. I decided to give them another shot, and put two in a sampler I bought here. I don't know what the box code was, but I thought they were fantastic. Completely changed my mind on the cigar. My first experience with them is more like what you described.

Sorry not smoked some from 2006 but still have few from Nov 04 and outstanding cigar.

I guess it's possible this is a cigar that needs some age but CAN be good when young. I've only had one from '05 and it was creamy but lacked flavor.

We'll not know for sure until the '06 crop has a few years and we can try one. As I understand it, this is just the nature of the beast. Age is as important an ingredient as soil and seed, in some cases.

Am I wrong? My experience is limited to less than three years so age is a factor I am just beginning to understand on a first-hand basis.

Corey, there are few hard and fast rules. We have had some exceptional 06 offerings which are smooth, full and complex. Others show a hell of a lot of promise but have rough edges which need to be smoothed out with time.

Then there are the shockers. Harsh or flavourless crap. Now...there is a possibility that they will come good over time and eben become spectacular This is particularly true of the harsher ones. My experience with flavourless youn cigars however is that they become flavourless aged cigars. I have had much the same experience with racehorses.....slow young racehorse generally becomes a slow old racehorse :-D

I've had about four mid-06, I guess about two were really good and two were kind of lacking. When they have about a year of age on them they are one of my favorite cigars. They have a great tobacco taste with spice in the background. Very nice.

Are the 05s of better quality tobacco, or is it that the 06s just need more time?

I have a great box from early 06.....can't recall the exact date off the top of my head, but they've been outstanding. Intense, smooth Upmann flavor.......coffee, cream, and cedar......

Still have a box of 24 of 05's in the humidor. Wildly disappointed. I have it currently laying deep in the prayador.

I was hoping that 06 might see a turn around in a cigar that was once probably on everyones must have list.
