KB24 Posted March 13, 2007 Posted March 13, 2007 What are the reason people say that cigars that come in the cab are better than 25 count boxes? Thoughts????? I got a Cab of PL Petite Coronas arriving tomorrow morning. -Patrick
genevapics Posted March 13, 2007 Posted March 13, 2007 The thinking goes as such: First, in todays world, ALL cigars sold, whether in Cabs or Dress Boxes are the same, that is to say, Cabs DO NOT get better cigars when the Cabs and Dress Boxes are being filled in Cuba. What most people do agree on is that cigars AGE BETTER in Cabs versus Dress Boxes. The reasons for this are many: some say it is the wood. Some say it is because the cigars are exposed to less air (in Cabs) than in Dress Boxes. Whatever the actual reason, I think almost every cigar smoker out there will tell you that cigars from a Cab taste better than those from a Dress Box, over time. Hope this helps.

I also prefer cabs for long term storage. I love the round parejo profile and the aroma which can only emminate from a ribbon clad bunch of 50. Long term do they age better? Not sure. I would think possibly but the % of difference must be minescule and near last on the list of factors which would affect long term ageing.
Matthew Posted March 13, 2007 Posted March 13, 2007 Well, I've had many BBFs from both dress boxes as well as 25-ct cabs and it doesn't take long for a taste diffference to be discernable. To me the cab BBFs are significantly better than their dress box counterparts.
Colt45 Posted March 13, 2007 Posted March 13, 2007 » I love the round parejo profile Same here - I'm not the biggest fan of the box press.
CoryOllis Posted March 13, 2007 Posted March 13, 2007 The key term is "over time". Time is a major factor for habanos and all hand-mades. Most cabs are 50 count and this means, on average, cigars from cabs tend to be older. Also, they are usually made from cedrela odorata, or Spanish Cedar. I just thought of another factor. Because cab cigars are rounder there is more airflow between the cigars enhancing the aging process. It's obvious I think aging has something to do with it.:-P
Ken Gargett Posted March 13, 2007 Posted March 13, 2007 it would be very interesting to conduct some blind taste tests. i suspect that cabs are, in time, better but agree the % is minimal. perhaps one could say that cigars from a cab are very rarely worse than those from a box.
