dragon Posted March 15, 2005 Posted March 15, 2005 H. Upmann Magnum 46 5 5/8 X 46 HFR FEB04 Rob Ayala describes these as "Upmann the Magnificent" and that description is right on the money as I see it. Light reddish tan colorado wrapper, superb construction with a flawless draw and a somewhat flaky dark grey ash. This is one cigar in my opinion that's fantastic fresh off the rolling table and gets even better with time. Full, rich, first class Cuban tobacco flavor with a nice "bite" to it and classic Upmann flavor profile. I tasted strong cappuccino, roasted almonds, and other flavors I can't quite put my finger on as well. The Mag 46 is 1 hr. of cigar heavan, and you could spend 5X as much and not get a better cigar. Overall rating 92+
rspdiver Posted March 15, 2005 Posted March 15, 2005 Great Howard, now there's gonna be a run on these things! Don't listen to him! They are foul, inconsistent, and taste like smoking a sweaty sock with catnip in it! :-P Or at least save some for the rest of us, for goodness sake.
Tampa1257 Posted March 15, 2005 Posted March 15, 2005 One of my Top 5 in current rotation, Got to love them! I am really thankfull that they are now available in cabs of 50.
Ken Gargett Posted June 22, 2005 Posted June 22, 2005 with all the discussions about the new upmann magnum LE 50s going on, thought it time to have a look back at these, a cigar that i personally have shamefully neglected in recent times. can't think of the last time i tried one and that has been a mistake. this one was a single stick from the CZ H'dor (current batch from CZ but rob or FL may be able to shed light on the exact box, date etc). thoroughly enjoyed it, especially the first half of it. thought the above review was pretty spot on, especially re the construction, draw etc. lovely richness to it - i got some dark coffee notes and a real rum/raisin character which really appealed. there were nuts and spice and a flavour quite similar to a good glass of aussie muscat (those not familiar with good aussie muscat need to fill this gaping hole in their lives). for me, the second half dropped off a bit, not in intensity of flavour but just a bit too young and a hint of an earthy character which was marginally dirty. otherwise really enjoyed it and think that with 6-12 months in the box, should look even better. will have to revisit more often. 89.
harwellplant Posted June 23, 2005 Posted June 23, 2005 lmao at rsp - mag46 was one of the first habanos i ever smoked. i went away from them for a long while, as my attention turned to other things. i had an opportunity to smoke one several months ago from a good friend's humidor, and it brought back what a great smoke this is. wonderfully complex and bodied. definitely one of my top 5 now, if not in my top two for a consistent smoke.
CIGARHead Posted June 23, 2005 Posted June 23, 2005 Oh yes...THE MAGNIFICENT! The Mag46 is in my top 3 smokes at this time. Which remindes me, get another box asap:-D Great review; I agree with all of your tasting notes. One that I get is a deep sweet flavor, but just the first pufff. I am half way through a box from '04 and every one has this sweet note right at the first pufff. What a great cigar..and a great price too. Always will be in the humi.
puros71 Posted June 24, 2005 Posted June 24, 2005 I had my first Magnum 46 yesterday and I thought it was an excellent cigar. Loaded with flavor. I will be buying a box of these very soon. Now one of my favorites.

Mel Posted June 28, 2005 Posted June 28, 2005 Well I guess I got the **** box of the batch. Tightest damn draw of any box I have ever had. Threw at least three out the truck window. Imagine my disapiontment after hearing about the easy draw. I hate a tight draw. When I reveiw a smoke and it does not draw well I will flunk it regardless of all other factors. I mean these things are made to smoke right? Flavor is great when I get some. I have another box in flight, and hoping for better luck.
Ken Gargett Posted January 17, 2006 Posted January 17, 2006 i've been working through a few of these - bought early last year as a bunch of singles from rob so not sure of age but assume reasonably young (taste like it). have to say, unless i have a bunch from a dud-ish batch, i really am struggling to enjoy them as much as most of the posts. trying hard. wasn't a draw problem, though one i had to relight regularly if i some much as stopped looking at it. thought them fair but ithey don't really seem to excite as much as one would wish and as much as they obviously have others. Quite powerful but they have all had that slight grubby character. There is an attractive caramel and raisiny note. Dark coffee. Nuts. but these came and went. Quite richly flavoured but much better if that hint of a dirty note was missing. Perhaps better in time. ave - 87.
guilow Posted January 17, 2006 Posted January 17, 2006 » Threw at least three out the truck window. :D LMAO! I had 4 sticks from a May 05 box and two have been window tossers. I hear ya about hating a tought draw. I can't stand that.
shrink Posted January 17, 2006 Posted January 17, 2006 Dragon... you nailed it. Inch for inch, the Mag 46 is the best that Upmann has to offer. In my experience, it is eminently smokeable, and enjoyable, at all ages. In it's youth, it is sharp, spicy and filled with tangy, pungent flavors of caramel and citrus. At two years, it smooths out and begins to reveal that wonderful musty Upmann twang, with undertones of baking spice. At four years, it becomes even more musty, creamy and savory, and can go nose to nose with the Sir Winston in terms of depth and complexity. To me, it is the IDEAL medium bodied corona gorda.
ALB Posted January 17, 2006 Posted January 17, 2006 Nice one Dragon, These are great smokes, shared one with Habanablue (which he kindly parted with) & found that the flavours, while quite strong are still very smooth. Great array of flavours too.
gabebdog1 Posted January 18, 2006 Posted January 18, 2006 I have been hit and miss with these babbies I get a good 1 then a really bad 1 to the point of giving up on them and then I try 1 more and its awsome agh!!!gonna drive me crazy
nbuchanan2 Posted January 18, 2006 Posted January 18, 2006 I've had many excellant mag46's, never a bad one but recently tried the No2 and quickly became a big fan. Those are both great cigars, however the only ones sampled so far from this line.... got a lot more work to do ;-)
Fatshotbud Posted January 18, 2006 Posted January 18, 2006 Decently rich flavor and gives a generous amount of smoke. Have smoked maybe a couple dozen and never purchased a one - go figure. Must be the most traded cigar out there. Good cigar though - thanks for the reviews.
Shiba Posted January 23, 2006 Posted January 23, 2006 I just had one from '03 last night and it was bliss!!! What a great cigar that had a lot to offer from a small package :-)
cf2112 Posted January 24, 2006 Posted January 24, 2006 I know I'm in the minority but I don't care for these at all, tried em from different years, boxes, and they just taste bad to me. Luckily there are a couple others I do like:-)
MrQ Posted January 29, 2006 Posted January 29, 2006 I would like to add these to my rotation great review.
Jimmy2 Posted January 29, 2006 Posted January 29, 2006 I have tried most of all H.Upmanns but to me the best tasting one has to be the Monarchs ...
pittesq Posted January 29, 2006 Posted January 29, 2006 Currently considering a box of these or the 50's. How different are these from those in terms of taste, flavor, complexity etc?
