marco polo
I think all countries should take Australia's lead!! I am Greek Orthodox and for hundreds of years the Muslims have been our persecutors ( i.e, killing our priests, destroying churches etc.).

I would agree that if you move to a country then you of course should follow the local laws and customs. This does not mean you forget your religion, language, customs etc. But if your creed or religion etc neccesitates a religious state, then yes you should find a home elsewhere. Australia is a nation of immigrants who have come to build a better life for themselves. and for the most part have got on to develop a great society, with a varied culture and a variety of religions. A very very, very small minority would like to see their political/religious ideals as the mainstream. The majority of Muslims in Australia, amongst and including people of other faiths, want peace prosperity and a positive life in Oz. The media loves a scandal and the Muslim 'threat' always sells papers etc. PE said it once: "Don't believe the Hype" Now let me go and throw some kebabs on the barbie and some tabouli next to the hommous on the table! Could not have said it better myself, but some countries and politicians will always use hate/fear in there political game, and there is always another side to terrorist attacks, I dont defend any attacks, but I cant believe that anybody just strap some dynamites around there body without a reason, probably something has happened before. The world would be such a better place if just everybody could tolerate other believes and thoughts.
winelover
I don't think that this thread is in danger of Muslim-bashing. It is merely stating that Islamic Sharia law, cannot co-exist with the western democratic state of Australia. In my view it is important for Western states to protect their own value systems and this necessarily includes a clamp down on facist organistaions or belief systems that do not ascribe to western democratic values or human rights. I also think that there is a danger of generalising and assuming all Muslim's living in Western countries such as Australia, actually want Sharia law. If they did, they would be wishing for Taliban Afghanistan, or even modern day Saudi Arabia, where women are banned from driving, thieves have their hands cut off, men have polygymous marriages, public executions - basically a return to the middle ages (minus the polygamy). I do not think many Muslims I know, living in the West would want that. I second the motion: "Hats off to Australia"!
habanablue
» No "bashing" here! I'm all about live and let live. Just agreeing » » about the extremists and relating a little history.:-) Marco, lots of atrocities around the world have been committed by people who were acting in the name of God eg the Christian Crusades as an example. and I would completely agree that life is all about live and let live. As a history teacher I can def relate that we must learn from history and not repeat it or allow others to repeat it. But we must move on through discussion, understanding and reconciliation. Most Muslims do want to live in peace as most people around the world do. However politicians and the media can stir **** up. If I wanted to create a cigar loving utopia I would have to move to Cuba (even though its tough there now apparently as well...) as It ain't gonna happen with the laws in Australia.....same applies to anyone wanting to create sharia law in Australia..... Peace out shalom salaam and peace in any other language... now smoke up!:-D
