LA FLOR DE CANO Predilectos tubulares

LOS-AGO 00

Date smoked: January 20, 2007

I am a bargain hunter, and am also interested in trying lots of different Cuban cigars, and so when a box of these from 2000 was available for about $3 a cigar I thought that I had to give them a try. This is a machine made, Standard size (40 RG X 123)—apparently discontinued in 2003.

It comes in a nice looking tube, very distinctive with its black and white backgrounds and red band. Appearance is typical of a machine made. A bit bumpy, and felt a bit spongy rather than firm when given a squeeze.

I smoked this one on a nice afternoon while sitting out by my pool. It had been in my humidor for about 6 weeks so it seemed ready to try. After opening the tubo, this cigar had a nice cedar smell to it. The draw was easy, burn was good throughout. It tended to hold its ash for just over an inch at a time. It produced plentiful smoke and had a nice but nondescript aroma.

Most tubos have writing on them in English. This is the first tubo that I have seen that has all of its writing in Spanish. On the side there is a note:

ENVASE ESPECIAL

Estos tabacos sometidos a este procedimiento conservan su FINO AROMA, por ser envasados naturales y acabados de elaborar.

J. CANO

According to a web site I found, it is mainly sold in Spain, Argentina, Brazil, the Caribbean, Africa, the Middle East, Canada, and Mexico.

The first third of this cigar yielded a mild, pleasant, tobacco taste, with a light olive taste. Nothing fancy, just a straight old style Cuban taste. The second third was very similar to the first segment. Pleasant mild tobacco, with a slight bit more strength and a bit more of the olive taste.

In the final third, this turned in to a medium to strong tobacco taste. During the last inch and a half it began to numb my lips a bit. I began to feel a bit of the nicotine rush and a strong olive taste.

With the loose roll, I had to handle this cigar delicately near the end, it felt as if I could easily crush it or put it out of shape if I didn’t use a delicate touch. At the end it started to unravel a bit and I left a pretty funky looking stub.

In summary, this was a good cigar, pleasant smoke but nothing to rave about. Nice change of pace cigar. I would give it 3 smoke rings out of a possible 6. It will be fun to share this one with others since it seems to be pretty uncommon. Since I have given some to friends on the Board I will be interested in reading other reviews of this cigar as well.

Nice review

This cigar is a blast from the past. I have not had one since about 2000. Can't disagree on the review and in truth it was always mean't to be an entry level, smooth inexpensive nondescript Habanos for the Tobacconist to offer his price conscious occasional buyer.

I also have a box of these from 00 and enjoy the flavor. I do find that they don't produce a lot of smoke on the draw which makes them taste a bit lighter than I enjoy, but still nice in the morning or afternoon.

There are a lot of years that i don't see that cigars. i have very good memories of they.

Months ago i found some Flor de Cano Preferidos (98) and Petit coronas (2001) and they are wonderful. But other occasions in the past i have smoked some of them very tasteless and bored. With this cigars is like a lottery , but when i find a good box , i think that i have win a prize.

I posted my original review of this cigar 7 years ago. I smoked what I think is the last one from my box today. I gave this cigar to my friend Chuck, aka Tampa1257 who has since passed. Chuck was well-known as a moderator and participant on the FOH Board. I got this cigar back when I purchased his Aristocrat humidor and a few remaining cigars a couple of years ago.

So I smoked this cigar today in fond memory of a dear friend. He would insist that I review it though. The taste has evolved since my review 7 years ago. The olive taste I noticed before has faded, Now it's woody and smooth. It's got the somewhat rustic taste of a machine made cigar from this era that includes tobacco not just from the premium Vuelta Abajo region (these included Semi Vuelta tobacco). Ash drops every inch as before lol. As with my previous review, it rapidly gained in strength and it made my tongue and lips tingle at the end. This one did not fall apart at the end though, a tribute to the value of proper storage :)

Chuck commented on and approved of my previous review as you can see in the thread. I hope he would approve of this review too.

Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar. But this is also a memory. It's a reminder that much of the joy of cigars is about sharing them with friends. And that cigars, like people, can mellow with age, but they retain their essence.

Great review! Especially like your marking system of rings!!

Thanks! Chuck really liked this system where 6 smoke rings was the max... I don't think I've used it in a long time. It is fun to revisit a cigar that I've reviewed before. I've got a bunch from this period posted on cigarsreview
