gehrig24 Posted November 30, 2006 Posted November 30, 2006 That is an awesome looking puppy. I am very much a dog person although mine would like at me like I was crazy if I asked them to retrieve anything. Post some more pictures if you get a chance.

I am very much a dog person although » mine would like at me like I was crazy if I asked them to retrieve » anything. Post some more pictures if you get a chance. He is 9 weeks old. Damn fine retriever who will retrieve anything including tubes. I train him twice daily and will do so for the next 9 months before bringing him each day with me to Czar House. Naturally...he will not only be retrieving cigar tubes from the humidor. I will train him to also retrieve crab pots and the occasional fish on a barbless hook. He will travel in the canoe with me. When he is a little larger I will put a harness on him and he can pull the canoe on the trolley. I haven't worked out how I can train him how to open a fridge Smithy is just upset that he could be replaced by cheaper labour ;-) I will post photo's as he comes along. The first full retrieve to the humidor will be captured on film :-D
gehrig24 Posted November 30, 2006 Posted November 30, 2006 If you can get him to bring you a glass and bottle of wine you may not have to leave the deck of the czar house.
Filliphy Posted November 30, 2006 Posted November 30, 2006 »Chesapeake Bay Retriever named Cohiba. Great bloody dogs! We had one in Canberra, and she was so smart/dumb that she would retrieve anything and everything that we threw for her. Including, but of course not limited to rocks thrown into a deep pond, and she even taught herself how to pick the lemons off our lemon tree, but then biting into them, she would spit them out, and growl at them! Having done that, she picked up the lemon off the ground and repeated the cycle! She was a loyal watchdog and great pet. I miss her.:-(
Colt45 Posted November 30, 2006 Posted November 30, 2006 » I haven't worked out how I can train him how to open a fridge a knotted rag/towel/rope around the door handle will allow him to pull the door open. though I'm sure he'd prefer going after the cheese:-)

Tampa1257 Posted November 30, 2006 Posted November 30, 2006 Somehow, I forsee a photo of Smithy wearing a training Harness with a Siglo VI tube stuck in his mouth in the near future...........
Freefallguy Posted November 30, 2006 Posted November 30, 2006 » I picked up my new pup last weekend....Chesapeake Bay Retriever named » Cohiba. Excellent choice of breed Rob. You’ll have trouble keeping him OUT of the water, so you’d best train him to walk over the croccie’s backs
1f1fan Posted November 30, 2006 Posted November 30, 2006 Great looking pup you have there Prez. Out chocolate lab (Havana) is a blast to have around. She is 2 and still has the energy of a puppy! I didn't know a thing about training dogs so my wife and I went to a training class that ran once a week for 6 weeks...it helped tremendously. I'll see if we still have some documents that teach the basics - I can scan them and e-mail them to you. As for training - keep it simple, reward with a lot of treats (Havana loves small pieces of hot dogs and are cheap) and get into a habit of repeating the same actions. Havana can be in the other room but she perks up when she sees me go into our guest room where I keep my humidor...and as soon as she hears the door for the Avallo close she is standing at the door to our garage waiting for me. She is my smokin' buddy. Repetitive actions followed by rewards will get a puppy trained quickly. Rely on hand gestures (no...not that one) and then combine the words to the action...sit, lay down, stay, siglo VI tubo, ryj tubo, etc :-D Have fun....I'm sure you and the kids will have a lot of good memories with Cohiba!
DrAlejandro Posted December 1, 2006 Posted December 1, 2006 fine looking pup there prez... good luck training him, never had much luck getting dogs to do what I tell them ;-)

Guest boss hogg Posted December 8, 2006 Posted December 8, 2006 My brother recently got two male Lab/Australian Shepherd mix puppies that we going to be put down- one black and one yellow. I laughed when he said "BAAH!" to scold them. Apparently it goes over better than "No!" The dogs are now 6 months and are VERY well behaved. No unnecessary barking. Like people, positive reinforcement works best. Just make sure he doesn't learn how to open a LE humidor and munch on a Behike....
Fatshotbud Posted December 8, 2006 Posted December 8, 2006 Great dogs - they do get rather large though so get an early jump on who is boss. I watched a friends CBR take down a teenager and have its way (quite amusing to see in my drunken state). Funny thing was the kid had asked if my dog bites........
sleeper Posted December 10, 2006 Posted December 10, 2006 Rob... He hasn't posted on this thread as of yet, but Josh Stafford, registered as either duckguy or ringbill, is a waterfowl ecologist that writes and photographs for a retreiver magazine in the states. He has his own gorgeous labrador, Tule, who is a bit under the weather at present. Josh is and would be my go to source for questions about my retriever, Ally. Congrats on your beautiful puppy!!
El Presidente Posted November 15, 2008 Author Posted November 15, 2008 I picked up my new pup last weekend....Chesapeake Bay Retriever named Cohiba. Much to Smithy's disgust....I am training it to retrieve Cohiba Siglo VI tube, R&J Short CHurchill tube and Cohiba Siglo II tubes from the humidor and delivering them to me on the rocking chair on the deck of Czar house (no...Habanos s.a are not producing more tubes in an effort to assist me). So.....if there are any Retriever Dog Trainers amongst our members...drop me a line as I would like to pick your brain. I apologise for this break in normal programming.

JJ, who posts here, is awesome with dog training. She trains guide dogs for the blind, and is on her third one. She is like that "dog whisperer" guy when it comes to teaching them how to behave.

Duckguy Posted March 17, 2010 Posted March 17, 2010 Well, this is 3 years old now and the first time I've seen it, but how's that Chessie doing, Rob!?? Josh Rob...He hasn't posted on this thread as of yet, but Josh Stafford, registered as either duckguy or ringbill, is a waterfowl ecologist that writes and photographs for a retreiver magazine in the states. Damn. There will be no need for Smithy now. I hate to see the young guy go.
jsaunders9 Posted March 17, 2010 Posted March 17, 2010 Reminds me of my freinds dog named Shotz. Got out one night and my buddy stood on the street corner yelling "Come Shotz"! Beautiful dog Prez.
Bartolomeo Posted March 17, 2010 Posted March 17, 2010 Train him to work a video camera so we get at least one video review per month Bart
innova Posted March 18, 2010 Posted March 18, 2010 On the note about positive reinforcement, it's hands down the most effective (and friendly ). Do a quick search on "Clicker Training", you'll be amazed at how well they respond. This is also how most of the tricks you see in movies are trained, i.e. beer from the fridge, et al. Good luck and congrats ! -innova
