Hoyo De Monterrey Epicure No 1 (ABO Jun 01) Review

Recommended Posts

Nice review Rob. Man, Smithy looks like Dirk Diggler. No wonder the fella's over at the Bath House are sniffing around. Keep "UP" the good work Smithy... :-P

On a side note, does the Czar House have any openings? Seems like a great place to work, what with all of the drinking and smoking going on. How about a winter internship paid in habanos?

Great pictures.

:rotfl: Ah... movember. Congrats to smithy for having the balls to grow an awesome mo, not being embarassed and growing some upper lip only poor excuse for one. I'm sure he's been propositioned by the boys across the road already. Make sure he doesn't have to walk to his scooter at night by himself, he could get into a bit of trouble, especially if that second shot gets around :lookaround:

Seriously.....The boys across the road are like cats on heat :-D

Smithy has three weeks to go.....one can only imagine what he will look like but I will capture it all on film ;-)

I really enjoy these reviews with pix, Rob! The Epi #1 is my favorite Hoyo, notwithstanding the excellent de Dieux and Piramide EL. The '04s are tops for me, but the '06s have all the right stuff... they just need a year or two. :hungry:

Excellent review Rob, and I want to thank you for reviewing and rating the cigar in the 6 smoke ring rating system as well. To know that the cigar was an excellent cigar and well on its way to becoming a classic states for me what is easily understood. Few cigars ever get rated above a 5, so it truly was a cigar to remember.

  • 2 years later...

Friday afternoon is a special place here at Czar House as we open a bottle of wine and light a few cigars to the discuss the week that was and the week to come. Monday to Thursday are pretty special too

For my second cigar of the day I went to the humidor and selected a Hoyo De Monterry Epicure No 1 which was the last ugly duckling in the box. The wrapper was all over the place, green streaks abounded and it was firm to the touch. Upon inspecting the foot it looked OK but I was not holding out too much hope of a stellar cigar....I mean....you are not the last cigar in any box without reason. The wine for the afternoon was a cheep and cheerfull Saltram Shiraz from 2004.

Cuban clipped the cap and found the draw to be a tad tight which thankfully opened up upon the first few puffs. Smell at cold was tangy tobacco. Taste at cold was much the same...intriguing mix of toasted tobacco and lemon peel like mum would scrape and put on cheesecake.

The opening to this cigar was nothing short of exceptional. Medium bodied with a marmalade and coffee profile. Seriously, it reminded me of the marmalade on toast....not sweet marmalade but the boutique marmalade you purchase at fairs and upmarket stores. Lemon, Orange peel....toasted tobacco and coffee. Purely divine. The strength increased through the mid portion but the core flavours never disappeared. More espresso toward the middle...still marmalade in the background. The one thing that I noticed is that I could in no way keep an ash on this cigar. It was as brittle as the clay ashtray I made in the 3rd grade.

Good mate Arthur Kassos popped in and enjoyed an 06 Monte 2. His comment was that it is finally great to taste a Monte 2 like the old days. Can you believe he ran 10.95 seconds in the 100m back at school :surprised:

And have a look at Smithy and his Diplomatico No 4. Actually have a look at his moustache straight out of a porn movie :-D In Australia it is Mo Vember and he is growing it as part of a charity event to be shaved off in December. He has had it for 10 days and the boys across the road at the *** bath house are sniffing around ;-)

And seriously....have you ever witnessed a more "brokeback mountain" cigar shot than this??????....and no...I didn't get him to pose for it.

Anyway...back to the HDM Epicure No 1. This was truely an exceptional cigar. The flavour profile did not change a great deal and it will benefit fron another 2-3 years. It has the body and the legs to see the journey through. It is difficult to complain about a cigar which was complex from the beginning and maybe I expect too much. This cigar gave me everything she had from the get go. There was no wooing and prompting necessary. God bless her.
