korryp
Very nice review. Now tell us something about the wine you picked to go with it.
Colt45
It would also be interseting to do a follow up with another from the January box - to check that consistency. korryp - I believe the wine is Spanish Sherry.
El Presidente
» Very nice review. Now tell us something about the wine you picked to go » with it. This was a late morning review so I selected a glass of "La Sacrista de Romate" Pedro Ximinez Sherry. "This rich wine made from Pedro Ximinez grapes has been matured for 35 years in American Oakcasks accoding to the method traditionally applied in Jerez (Spain). It has a deep colour and an intense raisin aroma. In the mouth it is very smooth and velvety, with a dlicate palate and long, complex palate. 16% Alc Volume. " Do you think that the Chocolate flavor may have been masked by the creaminess of the Sherry? While many times I choose a nice Tawny Port to accompany a fine cigar, Sherry has never come to mind because of the sweetness that I typically associate with it. BTW, nice review! Colt45
» It would also be interseting to do a follow up with another from the » January box - I had time and decided to try this myself today, and grabbed another from a January '06 box. It was a carbon copy of a previous sample. It had all the flavor, depth, and underlying power as described by Caesar in his earlier review. To my palate though, these are still very youthful - not harsh, but show quite a bit of herbal qualities with some bitterness on the tip of the tongue. I agree that the aging potential is huge. I can see these as being serious flavor bombs down the road. Sorry I can't share the same ambience as our humble host. No exotic beverages, no cowboys sporting flavor savors - just me and a cigar.... El Presidente
Montecristo No 4 Review ASB MAR06 I wanted to do a follow up review on this little Petit Corona after our last visit a few weeks back where Smithy and I were blown away by the flavour profile. The point of the follow up review was to assess the consistency between factories and codes. In all honesty this M4 did not have the same flavour complexity of the previous Jan 06 gem but that is not to say it was not a fine cigar. Construction was flawless. Nice wrapper, perfect foot and cap. Smell at cold was no more than true tobacco. No sweet spice notes whatsoever which I have come to associate with the Monte range. The draw was impeccable with the right amount of pull required. Strop drawing on this puppy and it would smoulder away smokelessly as if in a trance. Come back 3 minutes later and it would happily oblige with mouthfulls of thick smoke. Initially the body was full with a nice white pepper hit. No sweetness of any note through the first inch just toasted tobacco and a charry wood note. It developed hints of bitter cooking chocolate but this flavour never asserted itself...just teased you with the promise of things to come (reminded me of some lap dancers I have known). Construction was truely awesome with the ash a standout. Into the backend of the cigar and more toasted tobacco and charred wood. Increasingly a little cream came on to the palate which was appreciated as this was the standout feature of the earlier reviewed Monte 4. The 4 never became bitter and yet retained its full body profile which has become the calling card of 2006 production. I finished this cigar being both satisfied and a little dissapointed. Disappointed because it was not as complex as the last I had tried but that cigar was Cohiba sigloish in its complexity and one of the best cigars I have tried this year. So how do I evaluate it.....Good to very good. Excellent potential . With my tastes (a love of cream) I would ensure that when selecting a box of Montecristo No 4, I would select a box with a sweet cocoa smell at cold. If you are into Bolivar PC's then this cigar would be more to your liking with its more traditional and savoury spice core of flavours. 87/100 3.5 stars/
