The problem with ELs is that it takes a while before you can tell if ageing will bring their potential to the fullest. By then, its too late to get more of them or you're stuck with crappy ones that you have over ordered when they first came out.:-(

I must agree. I have been sitting on almost a full box and and after 2 years they are not nearly as good as whin I recieved them.

My favorite of the EL's today are the HdM Piramides. I love these suckers and found them great fresh they are only getting better. I also happen to really like the Moni DC and I think the Monti C is really starting to come around now. As for the HdM Epi Esp. I really need to pick up a box. From what I hear they are a HdM Epi 2 on steroids. Which for me is a good thing since I LOVE the Epi 2's!!

cohiba dc el is at the top of my list, with the sd3 behind.

candidly, i have never overly cared for the el releases. i guess they don't live up to the hype for me. there are many, many great ongoing releases that rank up there with 80% of the el releases. its personal preference, all the way.

I guess for myself, I have gone through a few EL "phases". A few years ago my favorites were the PSD3's and HDM piramides. I could not get enough of either one. Then however, I got burned out on that unique EL flavor and did not smoke nearly as many. And now I am starting to crave them again!........go figure!......LOL....

As with regular production, some have improved, some have gotten worse and some simply have have not changed at all. Like Rob, I find that the HDM piramide especially have not only NOT improved, but are not as good as when young. I smoked my last one a few nights ago and agree the flavors are muted. It was very disappointing, considering this used to be one of my favorites.

I also think the PSD3's are a bit one dimensional. BUT! I still love em! The Cohiba piramides were the biggest surprise. I kept hearing they were nothing special but really enjoyed the few I have smoked. The PSD1's are still young and the PSD2's are improving nicely. I made the mistake of smoking the #2's when they were way to young and WRONGLY decided they were no good. But I recently smoked another one and could definetly see the improvement in flavors and complexity.

IMHO the Partagas Piramide is really something very special. They have dramaticly improved from when young and are truly a great (and pretty damm strong!) cigar now. I like them best after big ole steak or prime rib dinner! For my tastes they rival the Cohiba DC for the BEST of the EL's. The RYJ & Monte robustos are also very good cigars.

I have yet to try the HDM Epicure Especiales or Mag50, but sound like they are worth trying.

I am concerned that this cigar will not reach the great heights I had hoped. It may be one of those to have been enjoyed early in it's life cycle.

Interesting. This is the first comment I've heard yet that has made me feel less bad about not being able to get my hands on any of these recently. They, with the 2001 psd3s, were my favorite LEs from the early runs. I've got a couple of those psd3s lying around. Have heard from other accounts they have indeed aged well. Maybe @awkwardPause will actually come visit me at some point so we can burn em together, along with the 98 party churchill de luxes, 03 hdm des dieuxs, and 1983 mc especiale #1s we've been saving for our next meetup ?
