I ussually buy the EL hooplah and get a box of each. I am not always thrilled as I thought I would be. The one exception has been the HDM Ep. Esp. These cigars seem more mature and have more depth than all of the others.

The regular line of the popular makers is as good as the EL's or better but the HDM shines out.

How bout ya'll?

I'm still getting my feet wet with habanos, so I have not yet tried any of the ELs. However, a few of the HdMs you mention are on their way to me right now. :-D

I'll report back when I've smoked one!

Can't agree with you more about the HDM EL esp, i'm mid way through a box from dec last year and they are quality. I know they will get better with a bit of aging but the trouble is keeping my hands off them until then.

These are neck and neck with the partagas SD#1. The build and draw is great and now that the oil from the wrapper is blending with the rest of the cigar the taste is wonderful - lots of chocolate, wood and so spicy they almost make your eyes water!

Gone through several boxes and have more on the way. Best of the LE's with the Monte C's being a close second.

Are they not pretty in the box? Bands look great against the dark wrappers. Construction is superb with one of the best draws that i've seen. This is one of the first cigars that I have bought that I sent aside a whole box for aging. I ussually smoke the first half of every box then set the second half aside.

I do the same thing. But I would say best overall Are HDM Pyramids. But That is why there is such an array of cigars. Every1 has differant tastes.

Dear Habanohol, I was only refering to the years 03 and 04. I do have three of the Pyramides from the 03 yr and wish I could find more. Come to think of it the HDM ELs would be about #1 and #2 of the two years mentioned.

I love the Cohiba lines but the HDM just seem to be more ready to smoke younger in the box.

OK let me throw a spanner in the works.

I think the HDM LE Piramide was better young. I think it has shown zero improvement and in fact I think it's flavours have become more muted.

I am concerned that this cigar will not reach the great heights I had hoped. It may be one of those to have been enjoyed early in it's life cycle.

Too early to tell and just my 2 cents.:lookaround:

OK by me Prez. you know I like to burn them young. I am not the most patient fellow with these here cigars. Buy them today and smoke them tomorrow. In fact I hate to age cigars. I would rather smoke them.

P.S. Loving the Forum and LMAO, great bunch on here.

Ok, for me, the Monte C has to rank as the WORSE ELs ever produced.

I agree the the Epi Esp ELs were fantastic, I think the PSD3s are also one of the best ELs available. But seriously, the Monte C.... I wouldn't smoke any more of those even if they came free

in other words, cartman, i can't give you my box of m/c 'C's (talk about caveat emptor with the pres!). couldn't agree more. i am so not impressed by these.

interesting what rob had to say re the hoyo pyramides. had one recently and loved it. still think they are brilliant, but can't disagree that they have not necessarily progressed. for me, even if they stay as they started, i'll be happy.

love the epi esp's.

still think that it is hard to go past the partagas pyramides. just brilliant. these are the ones that sold me on the whole LE concept.

the m/c robusto and DC both worth more than honourable mentions.

the two big cohiba's (DC's and sublimes) are interesting, but definitely not for scorched earth smokers like mel. think they both have enormous potential and now is just cigaracide. i know guys in havana who are convinced that the best of all the LE's is the cohiba DC though it'll take some time to confirm that. but that might be a good tip for anyone wanting to whack something away for a decade or so.

"Scorthed earth smokers like Mel" Lets rumble hombre. ;-) It is us smokers that keep these here cigars selling. Burning 2-5 a day is what keeps Rob and the lot in the dough$. Agers that let everything sit, never need to buy more cause they never run out or low. A decade? Crap.

I do like mature cigars and actually have some but I bought them that way Oh the irony of these cigars- You have to destroy them to love them.

mel, i meant 'scorch earth' in the nicest way. in fact, in australia, it is considered a term of endearment. i'd almost always agree re overageing cigars but i do think that if any fll into that category, these are it.

I'd have to agree that the Monte C EL's were crap.. Tried one and wont try that again

Some of the best EL's I have tried are the Partagas Pryamides... HDM Epicure Especiales, and RyJ Robusto EL... the latter is YUMMY !! Think of them and I want to get more boxes....

Of the ones I've tried form the 2004 ELs, my favorite has been the Partagas SD1. Of course, I'm a little jaded since I seem to like most Partagas and feel that the PSP2 is the best unaged cigar out there.

Dear Mr. Strayvector, I had almost forgotten about the box of PSD1 sleeping near the bottome of one of biggest boxes. These do have to get special mention up near the HDM Ep Esp. I only got one box of the Part. so they can not all die young.

PS2 seem to catch fire very easily. 10 have met their maker.

This is one of the first discussions of EL's that finds me nodding my head. Yep, for me the Hoyomids were the best, followed by PSD3, PSD1, and I confess I liked the RyJ Herm #2 enough to buy a box. BUT, the two Hoyo Epi Esp's I have tried were crappy. Yep, got 'em from Rob. Should I try again?

Best of the LE’s

Put the question of what they thought in Havana as the best of the LE’s. got the following response so not terribly definitive. I do know that some have said the Cohiba DC’s. this came from a mate who also told me that he has not seen a lot of the ones from 2002 and earlier so this helps explain the bias to the later releases. Reading the response, you will not be surprised to learn that this came from someone in marketing.

“As far as I tasted, my favourite LE cigar is Cohiba Double Corona (Prominente) H. Upmann Magnum 50, Partagás Serie D no 2, Cohiba Sublime and Hoyo de Monterrey Pyramids. Of course, Petit Pirámides from Romeo and Julieta is my favourite short smoke among figurados (pointed at one end). Don’t know, I must ask people if any consensus exists as regards to the best LE yet released. I’d rather think they love one or two cigars from every release more than others but many have told me they love the LE the way they are. It’s a concept we are going to maintain to give cigar smokers what they deserve.”

By no means have I smoked them all, but would agree with those that said Monte C were worst in class. Liked the Cohiba's so far, think DC's show most promise.

Some time ago I bought a hand full of the Partagas Piramides LE 2000s while vacationing in Greece @ the LCDH. I smoked one right away and wasn't impressed. It was a good cigar but young. Smoked another about 2 months ago and WOW what a turn around. Simply put this is one of the best Piramides I've ever smoked. ;-)

Whichever one you choose, I think these all need a lot of aging. My favorites young were the hoyomid and the D3. We will see what these might age into when they get older. The jury is still out on this whole el thing.

Best EL...SD3, Cohiba DC close second. The suyblime is a novelty smoke IMO. The early monte ELs are OUTSTANDING as well. Have yet to try the Hoyo epis.
