El Presidente Posted August 6, 2006 Posted August 6, 2006 I was really surprised with the 94 point review in Cigar Aficionado. I do not pay a lot of interest to CA reviews however this one made me Take a Sancho Panza Sancho home on Friday afternoon to enjoy after the rugby game Sunday. This is a huge "A" size cigar. My example was from 05 and perfectly rolled with a classic Colorado shade wrapper. The smell at cold was sweet...a mix of fresh woodshavings and blueberries. Clipped the pretty cap and tested the draw which was a touch lighter than I prefer but not bad at all. I had a slight reservation that the looser side of perfect draw might rob it of some complexity. I shouldn't have worried. Within the first third of this cigar I was assaulted with Toasted tobacco, cream and Christmas mince pies (blackcurrants and spice). The best part is that I still had the equivalent of a Churchill Sized cigar to go The second third built intensity into a full bodied cigar with equal hints of leather, tobacco, molasses and other sweet spices which drifted in and out. The burn was acceptable given I was enjoying this cigar outside in a prety strong breeze. The last third was a gem. The body was full, the flavours sweet and sour with some white pepper spice filtering through. Bravo to whoever is responsible for the best cigar I have had this year! Anyone else have one in their humidor which they can try?

anacostiakat Posted August 6, 2006 Posted August 6, 2006 I have a box of '97s in the humi. I was gonna wait for the ten year mark but I should be able to find an opportunity to smoke one soon.
Guest boss hogg Posted August 6, 2006 Posted August 6, 2006 I have an aged specimen of one of these beautifully constructed gems in a Pelican case :-D and plan on smoking it in the next couple of weeks.
broozer Posted August 7, 2006 Posted August 7, 2006 i had 5 from '01 and only have one left now. one was plugged and the other 3 were just so so. i was thinking of leaving the last one i have alone for a really long time. better yet, maybe i should buy another box of 10 so i can smoke one soon? bruce
Ken Gargett Posted August 8, 2006 Posted August 8, 2006 did chat with EP re this cigar and the review. got a bundle of sticks from EP 18-24 months ago (from the bargain bin if i recall) and tried one soon after. completely underwhelmed. then one a month or two ago (think i posted somewhere - clearly CA must have seen that review!!). a revelation. loved it and such an improvement over a relatively short time.
Black Plague Posted August 9, 2006 Posted August 9, 2006 That's why I like the underdogs, those cigars you hardly ever hear people talk about. They can REALLY surprize you sometimes and make you wonder why more people don't smoke 'em. :-D

purosdave Posted August 9, 2006 Posted August 9, 2006 I have only smoked one A sized cigar, a Monte A from 99 and it was pretty bland. I think it would be cool to have a box around though. What would you guys choose as the best for this size, the Sancho?

It is still a matter of getting the right box however.

Very nicely balanced with some sweet spice (not peppery though), toasty tobacco flavors, some light cedar notes and a wonderful finish that lingered long after the exhale. The cigar was rolled a little loose, but I think that aided the draw at the beginning and allowed ample amounts of smoke to fill my mouth each and every draw. This was believed to be from 2001, but I am not certain. Definately going to be adding these to the buy list.
Van55 Posted August 28, 2006 Posted August 28, 2006 Stock up now while supplies last. Rumor has it that they are on Habanos' latest to be discontinued list.
xibbumbero Posted August 29, 2006 Posted August 29, 2006 I have a box from 00 and they are absolutely delish. X :-P
