My latest boxes (thanks Rob) have big stickers on top that say "Smoking is addictive" and "Cigar smoke is toxic".

Any comments on the pros and cons of taking these off, will they rip off the varnish or leave a residue (on my Monte ELs) or mess up the decorative paper of a dress box?

I love opening my humidors and looking at the boxes and these stickers spoil the view a bit.

You know, I thought of this briefly some time ago and dismissed it.

Even though they are crappy and cover up the box I leave them alone.

I have taken them off a couple of cabs...it is a huge pain - the government definitely wants them to permanent.

I only remove them where they cover up a seal serial number or box code. I agree that they are a real pain to deal with. You can get the residue off my rubbing your finger back and forth over the adhesive, but the plain cedar boxes are stained for good.

you will ruin a dress box. Cabs you can remove them from if you peel with the grain of the wood and then scrape off any remnants. They suck. I wish they weren't there to begin with. But they always have been in certain parts of the world. Pretty much every vendor has some sort of guvmint sticker of some sort on their boxes.

Yes, they are a pain, and I have generally found that I ignore them except when they cover up a box code or other marking that is of interest to me. On a Cabinet or wooden box, you can use Goo Gone, I have not removed any from a dress box yet that way.

It is unfortunate that a Government requires them to be placed on the boxes, but such is life with the Tobacco Nazis.

Using a hair drier on high will soften the glue and most can be removed but some residue will remain most of the time. Time and time again I have asked Rob not to put these on but he ignores me. Hell I think he made them bigger and brighter.

It is the way of the world unfortunately.

Use a hairdryer or heat gum and they will come right off albeit start at one corner and work slowly.

Mel.

They are actually all placed by PCC in Hong Kong before shipping out. They place the stickers on for each country in the Asia Pacific.

Look at the posiive side...if you have purchased your box from HK/Australia/Singapore/Malaysia/New Zealand etc and you do not have a sticker of some sort....then it has not come from PCC.

How far back has this practice been in effect? Date when PCC started this on all of their boxes/cabs?

That's an old detailers trick, and I use it to good purpose on "special" boxes. It works especially well on varnished boxes. It's a good idea, of course, to remove the cigars first to protect them from the low humidity.

For Australia they came into effect March 1.
