Ken Gargett Posted June 14, 2005 Posted June 14, 2005 hi all. first, apologies for the prolonged absence. been on wine duty and off again to kiwi land so there will be another silence (i cannot manage the technology to link in if not at the desk). meanwhile, had a Hoyo LE the other day which prompted the following - Twice I have experienced a very curious burn. It has taken off in the centre of the end of the cigar and just gone down that centre without hitting the sides - eventually it emerges but of course creates havoc then for the burn until it all catches up and settles down. Neither occasion has affected the flavour or other enjoyment of the smoke but it is a bit bizarre and wondering if other members have experienced strange burns. Even more curiously, the two were both from the Limited Edition range. The first, which did not emerge for almost three inches (which was really spooky - I’m smoking this thing for quite some time, yet from the outside, it appeared untouched), was a Partagas LE Pyramide. The second, which lasted about 3/4", was the Hoyo Epicure Especiale 2004.
rumrogue Posted June 14, 2005 Posted June 14, 2005 El Presidente must have been on a work experience gig!
Mel Posted June 14, 2005 Posted June 14, 2005 Yeh. I have seen this. Even though the wrapper does not burn it will look odd and maybe darker or wrinkled. I torch the stick and solve the problem.
shrink Posted June 15, 2005 Posted June 15, 2005 Yes, Ken, I had exactly the same experience with one of the Hoyo Epicure Especiales 2004 that I sampled recently. About half-way through, the damned thing tunneled right up the middle. I actually had to cut the cigar and relight it. I didn't think it was too good to begin with, and it was awful afterwards. My conclusion was that it had something to do with the wrapper... are these "fireproof"?
El Presidente Posted June 15, 2005 Posted June 15, 2005 Ken. Just like you.....the cigars are unbalanced :-D Unless you are lucky, only a cigar with 3+ years will burn with a razor edge. It takes this long for the oil in the filler, binder and wrapper to balance out. The Epicure Especiales wrappers have been very oily to the point of being damp. Not an overly Ligero rich cigar either. The filler is burning quicker than the wrapper with often the foot of the cigar looking like an an uncircumsized pecker at half mast.....OK not the best visual but you get my point A little time at at 65% RH will assist a great deal.
smk819 Posted June 16, 2005 Posted June 16, 2005 Never had it happen on a Cuban Cigar, but I had this tunneling efffect on a Padron 3000.
rumrogue Posted June 16, 2005 Posted June 16, 2005 I've not seen anything written but I don't think he was particulary curious. The Scots seem to think he was a quite a good poet......or was it the Jews thought him a good rabbi.....mmm......(wanders off mumbling)......
Ken Gargett Posted June 20, 2005 Author Posted June 20, 2005 wasn't he the bloke that was curious about spiders? or was that morgan freeman?
