El Presidente Posted June 9, 2005 Posted June 9, 2005 Not feeling the need to compensate ;-) I have increasingly fallen in love with long thin cigars from 36 to 42 ring Gauge. They feel great in the hand, burn slowly and deliver some real flavour definition. I have listed my current favourites below but I would love to hear from others who share this fettish. I know they have suffered construction issues (draw) in the past but since 2004 these issues have almost dissapeared. They are now 70% of my personal consumption.....anyone else share the passion La Gloria Cubana Medaill D'or No 1 Hoyo De Monterrey Du Gourmet Montecristo Especial Cohiba Lancero Partagas Serie De Connaisseur No 1, 2 & 3. El Rey Del Mundo Grandes De Espana El Rey Del Mundo Elegantes
Tampa1257 Posted June 9, 2005 Posted June 9, 2005 Rob, I also absolutely love the thinner ring cigars! I have made it a point to stock up on these and personally feel they have the most complex flavor and provide a truly "Sublime" smoking experience. I would list my personal favorites as: Partagas Serie du Connaisseur No. 1 & 2's, for some reason, I have not been able to find the No.3's available, any idea when you'll have them? The Montecristo Especial No.1 was not only a classic Monte flavor profile, but the hints of Gingerbread were not only unique, but intoxicating and left my palate layered with a velvety blanket that was great! The Cohiba Lancero is and IMHO always will be the best tasting Cohiba, with the vanilla bean and mocha/coffee bean flavors, rich earthiness and notes of leather. Yep!!!! You can say that I appreciate the thinner ring Habanos!!! They MUST be smoked slowly and need to be well rested and maintained at a stable rh before smoking. I have been fortunate not to encounter many plugged ones, but historically I know that this was an issue. I could smoke these every day of my life and not get bored with them! Stellar, Outstanding, Unique, Complex, Flavorful, are but a few of the adjectives that I could use with these!!!! Tampa Edited for spelling
dragon Posted June 9, 2005 Posted June 9, 2005 I remember buying a varnished box of 10 LGC #1s from El Presidente a couple years ago, and while they may look kinda girly, they are actually pretty good cigars.
manny816 Posted June 9, 2005 Posted June 9, 2005 I have only recently discovered how great the smaller ring cigars can really be. As a newbie I was always under the impression that a larger cigar was better. I am glad that I discovered that I was wrong. I really enjoyed the two Montecristo Especial No. 2 that I have had the pleasure of smoking. Well let me correct myself. The first one that I smoked I did so way to fast. It burned very hot and tasted very harsh. The second, well the second was a wonderful smoke. I took my time and really enjoyed the cigar. I look forward to trying the Partagas Serie De Connaisseur No 1 very soon. Tampa, I read your review on the Partagas Serie De Connaisseur No 1. Thank you for the great review.
shrink Posted June 9, 2005 Posted June 9, 2005 El Presidente wrote: "Not feeling the need to compensate" To compensate for WHAT, Rob? What on earth could you possibly need to compensate for, you He-Man, you. :-D That being said, I am nuts about the Partagas Serie Du Connaisseur No. 1. Next to the Lusi, the most layered and complex Partagas there is, bar none. With age, it has both power and sophistication in spades. Tampa's recent review is so accurate that I cannot add more. The Montecristo Especiales are OK, but didn't knock my socks off. They are somewhat more spicy than say, a No. 1. I am looking forward to trying some of the LGC's.
FuzzyJoe Posted June 9, 2005 Posted June 9, 2005 » To compensate for WHAT, Rob? What on earth could you possibly need to » compensate for, you He-Man, you. :-D LOL. Someone's gunning for a free box of smokes

CIGARHead Posted June 9, 2005 Posted June 9, 2005 I haven't tried that many "skinny" cigars, but from the 3-4 I have, I would say hands down it was the Trinidad Fundadore. I recently had one with a few years age and it was a fantastic, very complex smoke. You guys are spot on w/ taking it easy, smoking these very slow as to capture all the unique flavors that come through..just a regal cigar IMO.
Freefallguy Posted June 9, 2005 Posted June 9, 2005 » years ago, and while they may look kinda girly, they are actually pretty» . . o O (Hmmm... I wonder if Mr. Gargett has noticed El P's passion for member proclaimed girly smokes???)
Curmudgeon Posted June 9, 2005 Posted June 9, 2005 Hmmm . . . I don't have a lot of experience with these long skinny cigars, but I do know LGC MdO No 1s, Lanceros, and Fundadores. I find the LGCs too mild, I like Fundadores, and I love Lanceros. I've been wanting to try more of these skinny cigars and am particularly interested in the Partagas SdCs, as I generally like the skinnier Partagas cigars like Coronas and Shorts. Are the SdCs reasonably hearty smokes? Do they resemble either the Coronas or Shorts?
harwellplant Posted June 9, 2005 Posted June 9, 2005 i don't smoke a lot within this guage, especially compared to the number of robusto sized i smoke. i did have a box of montecristo especiales no.2 a few years ago that were very nice. MAJOR plugging problems with that vitola, though. probably as much as 1/2 the box was practically unsmokeable. that left a bad taste in my mouth for similar sized cigars.
shrink Posted June 9, 2005 Posted June 9, 2005 Curmudgeon asked: "Are the SdCs reasonably hearty smokes? Do they resemble either the Coronas or Shorts?" I smoke a lot of Partagas Coronas, lonsdales and Shorts, and the Serie du Connaisseur is a very different profile. It starts off mild to medium bodied, with very complex but classic Partagas flavors. You'll think, "well, this is a refined cigar". Then the fun begins. :-) The smoke grows steadily more powerful and spicy, and finishes with a real kick in the ass. Nothing like it, but I promise you, if you like full-flavored Partagas (898's, lonsdales), you will not be disappointed. A real "iron fist in a velvet glove". P.S. I am really sorry, Rob, for calling you a He-Man. I know that you like to take Sunday brunch at the cafe with a LGC Md'or. But you have to admit, most people don't bring their hunting rifles...
smk819 Posted June 9, 2005 Posted June 9, 2005 Cohiba Lanceros and Trinidad Fundadores as well as Trinidad Reyes for a shortie.
Curmudgeon Posted June 9, 2005 Posted June 9, 2005 Thanks, shrink, you make them sound awfully good! I'm going to send an email to Rob and Lisa about these. By the way, gents, are the SdC No 1s the way to go? How do the the SdC No 2 and No 3 compare?

The Serie du Connaisseur No.1 and No.2s are IMHO basically the same flavor type profile, but the No.2 is about an inch shorter. I have yet to smoke the No. 3's, and hope the Rob has them available some time in the near future. Tampa
Puffdaddy Posted June 10, 2005 Posted June 10, 2005 To me, the lancero is the best of that bunch, and its a cigar I prefer to teh fundadore. Draw problems with this cigar are wildly overrated in recent years, in my opinion.
spiny norman Posted June 10, 2005 Posted June 10, 2005 I have yet to try many on that list but of those I really enjoy the La Gloria Cubana Medaill D'or No 1. What a great smoke and I allways get a compliment on the smell of it from the wife.
n-tron Posted January 18, 2006 Posted January 18, 2006 If I really have the time and patience, I enjoy the Rafael Gonzales Slenderella. In my experience, it takes more effort to smoke than some of the others mentioned here, but the flavor is the real payoff. The only other cigar I can remember with such a delicate (in a very good way) flavor was an aged El Rey del Mundo Panatela Largas … probably because of the similar size. I’m a huge fan of the long, sub-40 ring gauge cigar. On a lazy Sunday afternoon, there's nothing better.
Wiley Posted January 18, 2006 Posted January 18, 2006 It's rare for me to smoke something over 42. Not big on that whole giving a blow job to a donkey feeling I get from the fat cigars.

Van55 Posted January 18, 2006 Posted January 18, 2006 Min Ron NEE refers to a number of these smaller gauge cigars as "connoisseurs' cigars." Like many others, my Cuban cigar smokeing experience began with robustos, pirimides and belicosos. My experience with smaller gauge cigars began when I ordered a box of Monte Especiales No. 2 on the mistaken belief that I was ordering Monte No. 2. Wow! What a pleasant surprise they turned out to be. Now that winter is here and it is often unpleasantly cold in the garage where I smoke after dinner, I have begun smoking and enjoying cigars such as the Partagas Chico, the ERDM Demi Tasse and the Monte Joyita.
The Privateer Posted January 19, 2006 Posted January 19, 2006 One of my faves is the Quai d'Orsay Panatelas. Such vitolas tend to be overlooked and unavailable at the local divans. E.g. Punch Ninfas, RG Slenderellas, ERDM Elegantes.
sleeper Posted January 21, 2006 Posted January 21, 2006 I am also a lover of small ring guage cigars. I include Dalias and the 43 RG in my list of skinny's. For me, the Part SdC #1, Coh Lancero, Trini Fundy, ERDM GdE, and the Monte Especials are very high on my list when I have the time to nurture these delicate beauties. There are a handful of Lonnies I really enjoy including Upmann, Part, Boli, Siglo III and the Diplo 1. Of course, the Pu SS#1, Boli Inmensa, and RA 898 are great smokes in that range for me as well. I could go on and on and it has actually gotten to the point where I seldom smoke anything greater than a CG.
