Over 4,000 cigars seized at Havana airport

Cuba's Customs confiscated over 4,200 loose cigars, 15 boxes, and bundles at Havana airport, on a flight destined for Panama.

The Cuban Customs intercepted over 4,200 loose cigars, 15 boxes, and branches of cigars with various permits this Friday at the José Martí International Airport in Havana, on a flight destined for Panama.

So far, the identities of those involved in the seizure and alleged trafficking of tobacco have not been disclosed.

The route to Panama is not coincidental: that country serves as a transit point to markets in Europe, Latin America, and the United States, making it one of the most used for smuggling Cuban cigars, which fetch significantly higher prices in the international black market compared to their official value on the Island.

Current regulations allow you to bring up to 50 cigars in original sealed packaging with the Habanos S.A. hologram without the need for an invoice; exceeding this limit without documentation constitutes a customs offense.

This might be a stupid question, but these are fakes right?

I’d think many possible scenarios - farm rolls with fake bands, farm rolls with real (stolen) bands, real unbanded sticks stolen from the factory with real (stolen) or fake bands. Or any other combos I missed. Odds are on scenario #1, but it depends who the people are that got caught.

Well, they were technically "Cuban", but they were about to be elevated and sold as fake Cohibas... 🙈

It's a dire situation in Panama for the two La Casa del Habanos, as they are fresh out of stock and selling what singles they have left. The Panama City store may have to close soon, unless they get stock, but we all know that's highly unlikely.

Looks like Cañonazos.

My hunch is they are real Habanos taken out of the official distribution chain.

Interesting that they are exporting unbanded cigars, boxes, bands, and labels all separate.

I would think that you would either export the unbanded cigars from Cuba and then bring your fake bands, labels etc from China to Panama (or wherever) and do the final assembly there, or else you would do all your assembly in Cuba with stolen labels and then export fully assembled.
