My criticism has been that I am skeptical there is anything objectively superior to the EL to justify the higher price. If you like them that’s great. The couple I have had were very good albeit they were not aged all that much. I have two resting now that are maybe going on 10 years. But given what we understand about Cuban tobacco processing, I am not sure these are even as special as the Cohiba tobacco which has that extra fermentation. I don’t doubt the wrappers are cleaner and smoother and maybe they let some of the leaves age a bit longer but the fermentation for all the Cuban tobacco is the same other than Cohiba from what has been reported. Still, like other limited edition products the scarcity has a value for those interested and certainly for collectors. I guess the shame is that they are never to be repeated. I’d suggest the best sellers should be made regular productions. I don’t think it’s so much as the quality or age of the tobacco - that’s the Reserva and Gran Reserva lines. It’s more so the blends and different formats leading to different flavors. 1
joeypots Posted May 26 Posted May 26 ELs were a new program when I started with Cuban cigars. I knew nothing about storage, age, and RH back then. I bought boxes and waited for the magic to happen, like it did for a lot of the regular production cigars that were available, many with a few years on them for ordinary prices. There were a few that were very good and I kept them and smoked them, MC Sublimes come to mind. Eventually I traded my ELs away, when I had a better sense of what I liked, and replaced them with regular production cigars, especially Cohiba. Now I read that ELs have hit their stride at preposterous ages and I don't regret not having any in the stash. Back in the day I couldn't afford to wait ten years for a cigar to come around and now I don't have the time to wait that long. +, the ELs used to be in 25s and were not sold at a big markup. I smoked a Mag 46 from '20 a few days ago that knocked it out of the park. It was a perfect GTFOOT, five stars and buying that box wasn't akin to going to a casino and putting my $$ on red. 3 1
