Popular Post El Presidente Posted April 3 Popular Post Posted April 3 Every now and then, a fragment surfaces be it an old advert, a band, a box, a name long forgotten. Behind each is a story. In the "Lost Marcas of Havana" series, the thread is a starting point where members utilise their resources/inquiring minds to add flesh to the skeleton that remains of the brand. Let's start with El Potosi. I came across this advert earlier today. 6
El Presidente Posted April 3 Author Posted April 3 "Potosí is a high-altitude city in southern Bolivia, situated at about 4,050 m (13,290 ft) on the slopes of the fabled Cerro Rico (“Rich Mountain”). Founded in 1545 after the discovery of vast silver deposits, it became one of the richest and most populous cities in the world during the Spanish colonial era, symbolizing global wealth and exploitation."
westg Posted April 3 Posted April 3 Looking forward to what this thread brings. Wouldn't it be great to do a little documentary - "The Lost Marcas of Havana"? To go out in the wild searching!
Ryan Posted April 4 Posted April 4 There is probably more information about the El Potosí brand already on this forum than anywhere else on the internet.
Popular Post JDoughty Posted April 4 Popular Post Posted April 4 El Potosi is at least listed on page 129, Perelman's Pocket Cyclopedia of Havana Cigars. 20 hours ago, Ryan said: There is probably more information about the El Potosí brand already on this forum than anywhere else on the internet. Looks like you provided most of it! Found some more here. https://cigarlabelpriceguide.com/e/ And this interesting tidbit from eBay, which may suggests that the dating on at least this box was the 1960's or beyond? 3 1 1
El Presidente Posted April 4 Author Posted April 4 Urtiaga, Toledo y Cía. likely had multiple marcas under management. It doesn't appear that they were manufacturers but rather contracting from manufacturers for export brands like El Potosi. They may have had some domestic brands. If you can unlock the history of U.T. & C A (Urtiaga, Toledo y Cía.) that will shine a light. Y Cia simply means "and company."
