MadridPuros Posted March 30 Posted March 30 Coming from the NC world, as I’m in the US, I was unfamiliar with box codes and dates. The dates make a lot of sense for aging purposes and even knowing what crop years were better than others, but do you actually pay attention to which factory your cigars were rolled at?
JohnS Posted March 30 Posted March 30 Prior to the Covid-19 pandemic, the factories and box codes was much more important. When Cigarmageddon came along in mid-2022, everything changed (obviously) and chasing particular codes and factories became less of a priority/concern. 3
Lucas Buck Posted March 30 Posted March 30 If I’m buying aged stock I will put a premium on EL codes. Otherwise I don’t concern myself with codes much these days. 3
gormag38 Posted March 30 Posted March 30 Personally, they matter to me...but really just if looking for 'mother factory' codes when buying certain marcas. But as John said above, it was certainly more of a priority pre-Covid. There used to be good 'runs' on factory codes in certain years. Been a long time since I've heard anyone talk about a good run though...could have something to do with decreased production/supply. Anymore though it seems that Cuba is going to stand pat with their current factory codes, whereas they used to change every few years. You can certainly go down a rabbit hole if you dig on the forum for box code discussions. Happy hunting! 3
Popular Post ElLoboLoco Posted March 30 Popular Post Posted March 30 My only real concern is the ability to get them. 😂 3 3
JPark3 Posted March 30 Posted March 30 No, but that's primarily because I'm too inexperienced with Cuban cigars in the grander scheme of things. 1
BrightonCorgi Posted March 31 Posted March 31 To set the record straight, box code and crop years having nothing to do with each other. It takes several years from finca to rolling table. A box code is simply a factory code and month/year when it was completed. They can make some difference especially if you can get from the more famous factories and known good box codes. I don't chase them but would keep my eye out for a known good box code. 1 1
Marco_011t556 Posted March 31 Posted March 31 Even for cigars today, I personally prefer stocking Cohiba from the EL factory. 1
Li Bai Posted March 31 Posted March 31 If I came across several boxes of the same cigar in a B&M, I'd pick the most beautiful ones and then, I'd pick the one with the mothers factories' codes. But that's one big IF 😅😅 Actually, around 75% of the boxes I've purchased over the last two years come from La Corona or the Partagas factory, and it's not because I've been chasing them but only because that's what pops up here. 3
Ruggerpgh99 Posted March 31 Posted March 31 Wish I could care about it, just trying to get anything at a reasonable price. 3

Could just be that I'm noticing it more and it's not actually happening more though. 1

All I can say is that all the boxes I've purchased in this period from Diplomaticos, Punch, Bolivar, Por Larranaga, Quai d'Orsay and Ramon Allones came from either one (at least according to the codes). 1
Namisgr11 Posted March 31 Posted March 31 There is such a seemingly high proportion of boxes with the BRM/LaCorona code that I've been wondering if that's what's assigned to the prisoner cigar production. 1

If that is indeed the case I don't think I've seen that reported anywhere. Please let us know if you have any references confirming that BLM is the code that is designated for said cigars. 1

If that’s truly the case, then those inmates are doing a fabulous job. 👍 6

barrygoodvibes Posted March 31 Posted March 31 I hold tremendous respect for the El Laguito factory and the Partagas factory. If I happen to see a box from either I will pounce on it, but otherwise couldn't care less what factory it comes from. 3
