Cuban leader Miguel Díaz-Canel and Mexico’s president, Claudia Sheinbaum, during a meeting following her inauguration ceremony in Mexico City in October 2024. Miguel Díaz-Canel on X. Miami Republican U.S. Rep. Carlos Giménez urged the Trump administration to demand that Mexico cease oil shipments to Cuba and end contracts with doctors in Cuban medical missions as part of the upcoming renegotiation of a trade deal with the Mexican government.

In addition to Rob’s point, it is also about propping up Latin American targets for Trump’s imperialist ambitions there. Keep in mind, he wanted to bomb Mexico, not Venezuela, until he was dissuaded by Rubio. Cuba is the brass ring for them though, ousting Maduro is about oil and positioning Cuba for regime change.

Since the late 90's Venezuela has been selling oil to Cuba and they would then re-sell it to local Caribbean islands. The Magnitsky Act has been placed on both countries by the US, so any electronic transfer of funds in USD will result in assets being seized. Mexico enters the game in order to be an agitator by being the transition point for Venezuelan crude and they might make a couple of dollars along the way. Mexico (the government owns all of it) has oil but they ain't gonna give it away. So they have to tell the world that they are going to "subsidize it" at a loss. Up until 2018, the US was buying $42 million in oil from Venezuela daily. Multiply that by 365 and you've got a little over $15 Billion just in US sales. They were also the #1 supplier for jet fuel to the US. With all the sanctions in place how can Venezuela get rid of their oil? Added to that, all around the world there are Russian and Iranian tankers that are trying to distribute their crude but no one wants them in their ports because of further sanctions/tariffs. So the three amigos have to play these shell games to help out poor lil' Venezuela. C'mon brah, its all about the Benjamins. John
