Risk Level: Exercise a high degree of caution in Cuba due to shortages of basic necessities including food, medicine and fuel.

Details: Cuba remains a dreamy destination for Canadians, with its iconic classic cars, white-sand beaches and colourful cities — but it's not without complications right now.

Travellers are being urged to exercise a high degree of caution due to widespread shortages of food, medicine, bottled water and fuel. Getting around the island can be tricky, with taxi and car rental services often affected. Power outages, sometimes lasting hours, are common — especially outside of Havana. If you're heading to Cuba, pack essential supplies and don't count on everything being available on arrival.

Petty crime is also a concern, especially in busy tourist zones, on public transit, and at nightclubs and beaches. Theft from hotel rooms and cars happens frequently, and visitors have reported overcharging, scams and even harassment by hustlers posing as helpful locals.

While violent crime is rare, assaults — including sexual assaults at resorts — have been reported. Stick to busy areas, lock up your valuables, and avoid walking alone at night or accepting unsolicited help.

That being said, my employer's travel app (I'm on call 365) barely bleeps due to crime when I'm in Cuba or Mexico. It pegs the meter when I'm in Chicago and slightly less in Houston 😆 My employer forbids me to do only one thing, and that's to go to a White Sox game - I'm free to go to Cuba.

This posting is mostly due to our citizens' inability to factor in anything other than 'cheapest vacation humanly possible'.

Cheers!

I have found bullet holes in seats at the old Comiskey Park! That's been thirty plus years ago.
