I can't recall the last time I called a staff member who was on vacation. it would have to be urgent.

Still, if someone was that militant, they would be moved sideways ........down ......and then right out the door.

This is what you get with a Federal government owned lock, stock, and barrel by the Union government. :D

"What we are simply saying is that someone who isn't being paid 24 hours a day shouldn't be penalised if they’re not online and available 24 hours a day,” Prime Minister Anthony Albanese told reporters earlier on Wednesday.

Lol - wild that we require laws to enforce this sentiment

We don't. It's common sense.

If the call is not important,  the employee apparently hasn't the the cojones to tell the boss where to shove it, resign and find a job with a boss who is not an arsehole.  He now needs legislation to protect him/her.

God save us from politicians

All hail eggs over easy. Does anyone actually take him seriously? And the flip side is even worse.

Whenever government gets involved and starts treating us like kids, we go one step backwards.

To each their own, but I get more irritated when I’m not contacted. I’d prefer to solution it appropriately rather than come back from a weekend or vacation and find a mild fire has spread to a wildfire.

While I don’t agree that government regulation of working condition necessarily leads to laziness, inefficiency, et al, it certainly can have that effect when it starts micromanaging.

Nobody makes off-hours phone calls these days unless it’s urgent (or they’re an asshole). I’m all for employees setting reasonable bounds on when they’re expected to respond to emails. Though it can be awkward, I certainly don’t think they need the state’s help to do so.

Silver lining - your government actually functions well enough to pass legislation which does something other than cut taxes or spend money.

Salary work means always available.

That depends on the salary 😉

I would have loved to be a bug on the wall during that meeting.  A government meeting that probably started at 10 am and finished at 2 so they can go back home. They ran out of subjects and some genius brought the idea. They all scratched their heads and clapped in awe before closing their work day. Next on the agenda is how many hours should we spend with our wives in the weekend?? Well, that is another thread.

Ha yep. Or some union dimwit's daughter received a call at 9pm on a Friday night stating A an B can't make it in to work tomorrow. Can you cover for them? How inappropriate! I will put a stop to this.
