one of the silver linings of covid over Christmas is that i have got through a heap of good books. and other books.

i read a bit of John Grisham back in the day - half the world read The Firm. and it was a cracker. done really well. others of his have varied but have been enjoyable. when i saw that he had done a sequel to The Firm, called The Exchange, i was keen.

it is an easy read but i am wondering if anyone else has read it and what you thought? for me, and this might be a bit of a spoiler but i would suggest it is more of a saving, it was okay but i wondered what the hell was the point. it is basically a hostage transaction. there is quite a bit about big law firms and having worked in a number, he is not wrong. i did feel really uncomfortable reading those parts and very glad i am out of all that. i could not work out whether he was being critical or if he was envious of them.

but the plot could have been a simple police report of a hostage situation. take hostage (okay, it is in Libya in Gaddaffi's time), arrange to pay terrorists. all done. go home. that is it. not a single twist or turn. for me, he has just phoned this in. he has become the tarantino of crime and legal thrillers.

or did i miss something?

perhaps the twist was that there was no twist?

Read it back in October of last year. My recollection is that I did not think it was all that great. It was Ok. The setting kinda put me off. Heh.

ok pretty much sums it up. but when you look at some of the early stuff, then it becomes disappointing. for me, at least.
