Yes, it’s true. NRL Rugby will be played on the evening of March 2nd with a Las Vegas Doubleheader to open the season

https://www.nrl.com/vegas

I have tentative plans with a crew of a few gents that I once upon a time played rugby with to attend. When I say tentative, we have tickets to the games and no hotel or air yet. A few things to sort out on fly in and out …

I will be going with at least one other CC smoking buddy - so if any of this crew is going let’s connect  It would be great to meet any of “my pretend friends “ as my wife likes to call this forum

Next step for me is to acquire appropriate (or inappropriate) jerseys from Ali or DHGate for a classic NRL player. I will be outfitting the entire crew. We intend to be loud and um boisterous. I’m thinking something akin to the Pete Rose of NRL. 6-8 in a row with the same jersey might get up on TV down under.  Before I dive in too far, any immediate suggestions from those familiar with the rich history of the league re teams, names and or numbers?

this is the info from over here (one of the big mistakes that many make is thinking that this is rugby. it is not. rugby league. similar but different. much tougher game these days. 13 men, not 15, no lineouts, lots of small differences, like 6 play the balls then kick or lose it).

manly are the 'too good for anyone else' team but usually so many injuries they get nowhere.

souths were a great team, then were crap for decades, have been much better lately though this was a horror year for them.

roosters (or as they are affectionally known here, the salary cap cheating scum of the comp) and Brisbane are the only sides still in this year's comp. roosters should get knocked out Friday. Brisbane are a chance to go the distance. the two guys to watch from Brisbane (supporting any other side would presumably mean instant and permanent dismissal from the forum) are payne haas and reece walsh.

haas is a beast and has one of the most incredible engines i have ever seen from any sportsman. imagine one of your top defensive linesmen playing every snap, defence and offence, for the full game and running from one end of the field to the other all night. walsh is just 20 but electric. one of the quickest and cleverest players you'll ever see.

what amazes most NFL fans the first time they see rugby league is amazed at how the players go for so long, playing both offence and defence, and also how tough it can be with minimal padding.

here are some highlights. and below that, some highlights from the first of the best of three origin games (that is when nsw and qld - the guys in maroon who are the white hats - pick ntheir best teams, bit like an all-pro game but taken incredibly seriously).

All of the team selections make sense to me except Manly. How are you going to get Manly fans to cross the world to see their team play when they won't even cross the harbour?

@Ken Gargett you coming over?

I am aware of the differences in games. This is still a great excuse to go to vegas to eat well, drink, gamble and watch some live sports. March madness has become a bit too crowded for me after nearly 30 years. Looking for a new March vegas trip - especially since I can gamble on basketball games now from my back porch while grilling a dinosaur sized steak on my grill. Hoping Vegas isn’t quite that mobbed.

Thanks for the leads on some names. We need to show up w some good jerseys and perhaps a rooting interest. The evening game times might be pushing our endurance a bit though. It will be day two or three of the visit 😂

no doubt some fans will make a big holiday out of it but it will all be televised free to air back home, i gather. so not so much about getting aussie fans across there but rather, introducing the game to America.

apols, did not mean you specifically. just something we get all the time.

no, i won't be - it is a game which works really well on tv. broncos home ground is about 20 minutes from home. used to go to some games when younger but these days, too easy to watch on tv. not sure how many games i'd get to if i was in vegas.

for those over there, if it helps, the aussie nickname for Brisbane (who are sending the Brisbane broncos) is brizvegas. hopefully we'll get some local support.
