It sounds like we are stopping more Cubans at sea than others at the southern border when it is compared on a percentage.    Curious to see the expenditure of manpower and equipment actively trying to stop Cubans vs the same expenditures on the southern border.     Cubans are legit refugees.   I have no issue letting all who come here stay.   I am curious as to the root cause of the disparity (I may be wrong though)

Quite a few Venezuelans as well it appears for similar reasons.

I would agree but even Cubans don't automatically meet the criteria for asylum. Almost no one does. It's a very high bar to meet:

In order to be granted asylum, an individual is required to provide evidence demonstrating either that they have suffered persecution on account of a protected ground in the past, and/or that they have a “well-founded fear” of future persecution in their home country.

These "protected grounds" are below. Only if a Cuban can prove that he or she was specifically persecuted for political opinion would they qualify.

because they have suffered persecution or fear that they will suffer persecution due to:

  • Race
  • Religion
  • Nationality
  • Membership in a particular social group
  • Political opinion

And Nicaraguans, and Salvadorans, and Mexicans and Hondurans. The flow we've seen for the last 15 years didnt slow down, we just added huge numbers from additional countries on top. Most of Central and Northern South America are a disaster right now. Just like the drugs flowing in the same direction, the problem wont go away until the demand does. Demand for Drugs is as high as ever, so more keep coming through. The demand for a free, safe place to live is as high as ever, so more people keep coming through. Its not rocket science. It was easy to say "not our problem", but its very much our problem now.

This one seems to be a pretty easy catch all for Cubans. "I'm not a Commie, so my freedom and life are at risk." I don't know the hard numbers (I don't think anyone really does) but we aren't actually turning back very many asylum seekers right now. We are "Title 42ing" them, giving them a court date and asking them to leave until said court date.(its a better deal than most get in the US court system) I'm only aware of a couple plane loads of people we returned from Florida, but I have a feeling it will become more common. We just cant process this many people this quickly. Its truly a mess.

I wish we could just pull up an aircraft carrier and just grab anyone that wants to leave.

Only Military and Government officials/their families would be left.

Or, I was caught up in the July 11/21  nationwide demonstrations against the government  and fear prosecution.

They would need to provide some evidence that they were specifically persecuted or feared persecution. It's a case-by-case determination by an administrative judge. Otherwise the whole country would essentially qualify for asylum which obviously isn't the case. Now, the fact that they tried to escape itself could result in their persecution upon return represents an interesting wrinkle. Not that I'm not personally in favor of the US allowing every Cuban in--I'm just pointing out the specific criteria for qualifying for asylum.

Yeah, I'm a little confused about exactly what's going on. I'm seeing around 2 million have been expelled under Title 42 but I'm also seeing 4-5 million have gotten in. I'm not sure if those 4-5 million are straight illegals or "gotaways" or if some portion were allowed in after applying for asylum. If the 5 million number is accurate we could have already let in 80% of Cubans and be where we are now. And I would argue Cubans are much more aligned with US values than most of the Central American immigrants.
