+1 to the BPC, or BBF, or Bolivar anything really. The other might be if you have any RyJ from the Churchill series could be a nice way to round out the HSA global brands portfolio.    
 

For HU, if you have them, instead of the #2 and Mag 50, I would go Connie 1 and Mag 46 as I think they capture two parts of the HU profile really nicely in a good size.

You mentioned it in your post, but as someone learning the profiles of the different marcas/Vitolas… I’d prefer 2 of 20 cigars vs 1 of 40 different cigars. Once to try, twice to understand. If your one offs are special cigars I’d agree with some of the other guys and hold those to enjoy together so you could potentially point some things out about them. Super nice gesture too. Maybe throw a Govee in there so you can monitor them😂

Frankly, I don't find any CCs that strong though.  But I think JL would acceptable for a beginner.  Not too complex, which is wasted on a beginner, and still gets to the essence. 

Party shorts might be a good one for the list too.  Not intimidating, gets to the sweet spot fast, and really captures the Partagas profile without requiring much patience.  The D4's are a hell of a good Party rep, and you've got that, but petite coronas are an easy grab for a virgin palate.     

Adding to this sentiment (which I share), show him how to properly smoke a cigar. A major part of the enjoyment - in particular for a novice - lies in the proper smoking and much less so in the actual cigar itself (thorough keeping a given). Or they all might be wasted.

Including some trusted cheap & cheerfuls is a must in such a sampler.

I haven’t really got anything to add as it seems every base has been covered. Just wondering if you’re taking applications for new friends?

An incredibly generous present, I just hope he has deep pockets for the rabbit hole this is going to lead him down!
