Pinar del Río, Aug 26 (RHC) These days, tobacco growers in the western province of Pinar del Río, the largest producer of the leaf in Cuba, are beginning preparations for the campaign corresponding to 2021-2022, tasks that begin with soil clearing for seedbeds.

Once again, animal traction will play an important role in these tasks, since the peasantry of the province does not renounce the use of ox teams for all that it represents in terms of savings and environmental benefits.

Virginio Morales Novo, agricultural specialist of the TABACUBA Business Group in Pinar del Río, commented that in the upcoming Vueltabajo campaign it will use more than 16,300 hectares.

Morales explained that they will be distributed among the varieties of covered or under cloth, sun skewered, Virginia and Burley, the latter to meet the demands of the cigarette industry. (Source: Radio Rebelde )

Or any Tractor at all. The phot below is from our trip a couple years ago. It was only sitting there because they didn't have any diesel to run it. I'm guessing its the same situation there right now.

This is one of the nicest I've seen in PdR. The Pride of Quemada de Rubi:

Too little - too late ... :

Tabacuba finally reacts and increases the price of the tobacco it buys from farmers

The measure comes too late for some growers, who had given up farming because it was not profitable for them.

DDC Holguín 27 Aug 2021 - https://diariodecuba.com/economia/1630090357_33692.html

On August 24, new prices were finally approved for the state purchase of tobacco from Cuban farmers. This was revealed in a report by the Cuban News Agency (ACN) and the Television Information System.

The Tabacuba company, a state monopoly that acts as an intermediary with the tobacco growers, announced that now the price of "covered" or export tobacco, with which the thin layers are produced, is increased almost three times and tobacco "in the sun" for national consumption increases by 44%.

The news has been welcomed by hundreds of Holguin producers, among whom there was great discontent since the beginning of the year. Many of them even gave up on continuing to produce tobacco at the previous prices.

At the beginning of the year, the complaints of the tobacco growers had summoned the authorities. During the current economic crisis, which especially affects the agricultural sector, tobacco was not only affected by its growth due to lack of resources (mainly of national production), but was literally sabotaged with a price out of date with the economic reality of the country and the farmers' production costs.

The lack of a response to the demands to modify state prices led not a few peasants to destroy their infrastructure and sell the materials for other purposes. Something irrecoverable now, although they feel stimulated by the new prices.

For José, a producer from Holguin, it has been too late: "I decided not to plant more because the investment was too great for the price, and what is earned is very little. And I destroyed everything and sold it. And like me, a pile of disappointed producers, "he told DIARIO DE CUBA.
