Medium Ring Gauge Cigars (as of January 2021)

This is a follow up to the Real Skinnies post. The next size up in the traditional hierarchy of ring gauges after the thin ring gauge or skinnies, is the medium ring gauge, roughly 40 to 44 RG.

This is divided into essentially 3 main categories, Petit Coronas, Coronas and Lonsdales based on length. Petit Coronas as a category encompasses Petit Coronas/Marevas as a specific vitola, but also all the shorter cigars of a similar ring gauge such as perlas, minutos and others. Coronas encompasses the Coronas vitola as well as cigars longer than a Petit Corona but shorter than a Lonsdale. While Lonsdales are the longest cigars of 40 to 44 RG. For the purposes of this division I'll lump the Half Coronas in the Petit Coronas category, though they could be a fourth category of their own. Also I'm lumping Long Coronas with Lonsdales for simplicity as the category is almost entirely comprised of the single vitola of Coronas Grandes (and some JLPs with their unique vitolas).

I feel the middle ring gauge cigars are the bread and butter cigars or at least used to be. However there have been quite a few new standard production releases in recent years. In the premium category since the 90s we have the siglo 1-5 series (minus the 4) in 1994 (though in a sense they came as replacements for many Davidoff vitolas that disappeared in 1991). The smaller Cuabas in 1996. The fundadores in 1997. The Principe in 1999. The Reyes and Coloniales in 2004. The Secretos in 2007. The H. Upmann Half Corona in 2011. The RG Perlas in 2012.  The Monte Media Corona in 2015. And the RyJ Club Kings and Partagas Capitals in 2015 and 2017 respectively. 17 releases in total if I've counted correctly (not counting the volume brands of JLP, La Flor de Cano and Quintero). It might be as instructive to look at deletions in the period, but I'll leave that to a future post.
