his granddad actually swam past me several times up on the island last week. fortunately, he did not take the bait i had out. if you do hook one, there is nothing one can do. they just chug along slowly out to sea until you break them off or run out of line. which can't be fun for them, so much better not to hook them, if you can avoid it.

I remember as a kid here on Maui, the long-gone Pineapple Hill restaurant was famous for having green sea turtle stew on the menu. Of course, their numbers started dwindling decades ago, partly because the tiger sharks found them quite tasty as well, and they’ve since been protected.
