Was speaking with Gav Platz this morning - he'd be the best salt fly guide in Queensland - and he put me onto this new video for a new project fishing for bones in the Kiribati region. Great stuff. A little long, 20 mins, but also looks a bit at island life. Gav was telling me that anyone 8 or under had never seen a white guy the first time he went. Thought that they were gods (Rob, I didn’t realise you’d already been).

For anyone who has not caught a bone, check out the speed they go at and how there is nothing you can do first run. They just explode. So exciting.

Worth a watch.

Great video. Last time I was in QLD I was on Hamilton Island and was disappointed that all the fishing charters didn't offer fly fishing. I left all my gear at home otherwise I would have gone solo. My wife reminded me we were on vacation and not there to fish...There was a great video on the most recent Fly Fishing Film Tour 2019 film of some guys catching some bones and the "bastard" fish on the fly. That and this video makes me wanna return!

Thanks Ken

Great vid. Gav Platz is indeed a salt water fly legend.

With current travel restrictions, exotic fly fishing trips seem a long long long way away!!!

Great video, Ken.

I've never had the chance to target these fish but I have several friends who seek out and only go for Bonefish down here in certain parts of south Florida. Almost like a mini Tarpon they are with their colors, strength and elusiveness.

there are a couple of famous guides who do salt water fly up there. surprised you didn't get a referral.  next time, let us know.

not sure Hamilton is a known fly fishing spot but plenty near it. inside Fraser Island, a bit to the south, they chase juvenile black marlin on fly on the flats. same place has great queenfish and much more. beware the tiger sharks.

^^ Good to know, thanks. I was looking for a fly guide from the states before my wife and I got on the island and I didn't come up with anybody. Then, when we were on Hamilton, I probably was asking the wrong folks, they just didn't know. They heard fishing and referred me to I think one of their contracted partners who does fishing (we were staying at Qualia) but nothing on the fly. Speaking of tiger sharks, while we were there (this was 2018) there was a pretty brutal attack the day we arrived. Thankfully, everyone was okay but we went out onto the reef the next day and the boat crew were pretty unnerved by the whole thing and kept us close to the boat.

residents that have never seen a white guy and bonefish that have never seen a crazy charlie fly. They’re certainly not in the Florida Keys!

i went to ethiopia mid 80s and a lot of people there then had never seen a white guy, especially the kids. the kids, who were fantastic, would run up to you and rub your arms. took me a while but i found out they were trying to rub the white off to see if i was normal (black) underneath.

the other thing i remember about the place was that the one cinema in addis ababa was showing, 'razorback'. an aussie gore fest about a giant wild boar doing its best jaws impersonation in the outback.
