Hey all, didn’t want to sidetrack the other conversation happening on dry boxing but was curious what your guys’ recommendations were on dry boxing if you live in humid areas of the world.

Typically I’ll throw a cigar in an old humidor or just leave it out for 4 days before I smoke it. However with COVID I’m staying in a different home, in a much more humid area and don’t have my old humidor with me.

So curious to hear how you guys deal with that.

Thanks!

I used to spend winters on an island off the coast of Honduras. I'd bring smokes from home where they were kept at 64-64 and they were bitter and fireproof until they had a chance to get acclimated to the intense humidity. I just opened the box lid and left the sticks out on a shelf. After 10-14 days they acclimated to the ambient conditions and smoked great.

I'll put them in a empty cigar box with a piece of cedar in the bottom, put it in one of the coolest areas of my house and leave them there for 3-5 days.  This works well for me and its always between 60-90% (or feels like it) humidity outside.  Everyone is different but this works for me.

FWIW, my ambient humidity is often too high to dry box in the open, so I use a 58% Boveda in a sealed plastic box.

Sounds like you are better off just keeping your humidor at a lower level and smoking direct.

Having said that, Pres posted awhile back a trick on putting the cigar in the fridge for like 24 hours.  Something to the effect.  I'm going to have to go find the post.

Edit.  Glad I found the post.  I was WAY off.

Clip the cap, into a zip lock leaving it open...into the fridge for 45 minutes - 1hr.

It will drop a cigar from 70RH to a 58-60 feel in that period.

take it out of the fridge. Seal the zip lock, leave 20 minutes .

Smoke it.
