Making a pilgrimage to see family for a very quick visit in Toronto in a few weeks. I will be driving for a host of reasons and will be heading over via the Ambassador Bridge from Detroit to Windsor.

Wondering if the duty free there is worth a visit for cigars?  I will have a Canadian passport in the car as they say, so in theory can purchase whatever is for sale. Is this stop worth the effort other than topping off my gas tank w some tax free gas?

Thanks

Canadian duty free here has NO Cuban cigars (in agreement with U.S. policy on Cuban cigars and products still).  There's some various NC sticks, but honestly, the prices are still more than just regular prices at NC tobacco shops in Michigan (it's only "duty- / tax-free" when comparing to Canadian prices).  Other than that, there's an actual LCDH shop in Toronto (the one in Windsor is still "temporarily closed").

Make a view inside if you'd like, for the NC selection in the Canadian-side of duty-free.  But also, duty-free gas is only on the Detroit side, coming into Canada.

The only deals may be on some discounted women's hand bags or a special deal on liquor or wine.

Thanks. Regrettably it sounds like things have not changed much.
I will be stopping to top my tank off. I have almost enough range on a full tank to make it to TO AND back to the states without needing to buy much more than a few gallons of insurance.
Unfortunately no extra time to hit anything fun when I’m in TO. MIGHT try to stay at a hotel near my aunt/st Lawrence market to pick up some food early Sunday morning while the rest of my passengers sleep. But that’s about it.

That’s disappointing. I’m heading over to London (Ontario) next Tuesday for a quick sales call and then back to Detroit on Wednesday. I was really hoping I might be able to find some “deals” at the duty free there.

Thanks for the replies which will save me a stop on my way back to the US.

@CanuckSARTech and all else who go through the Ambassador Bridge.

just came back from a weekend trip. Duty free into Canada was as expected. I did not find the cigars. Booze was not a great selection

coming out of Canada unto US a completely different story. I missed it but the friendly US Customs guy told me that the sell Blantons bourbon for 49.99. CAD  Here is the rub. You can bring more than one bottle into US you just need to declare. He brought back three cases for his Vet buddies recently. He said his duty per bottle was under $3. The exact opposite into Canada though where duties include extra bottles exceed costs.

It was late and I was helping my Mom who has walking issues and there was no one manning the cash registers but look at the photos below. Prices in CAD on a few boxes I handled. And oh my, that 2010 date. In the humidor as of 11/24 at 11 pm.

I don’t think Americans can make that purchase but if you are arriving in US w a different passport some aged sticks. But the next time I have family visit ...

this was a very quick random assortment when I grabbed my camera. I did not confirm authenticity either. Had to go.

hope you or someone w the right passport can grab a box.

Lol, that Monte Open Junior from 2010! Just can't get rid of them! :rotfl:

I’m thinking that box has a story that may never be told.
