I have competed and never quite understood the euphoria :D

While it's not for me....Hat's off to Marko for taking it from concept to global F1 proportions

I mean, I'm not saying it would be fun per se, but it's quirky enough to be worth a try hah!

Did I read that right that some people didn't make it past the 1 hour mark? Any idea what the cigar was and the vitola?

It's a Macanudo petit corona size this year, I can't remember the name of the size. Once upon a time they used Monte 4s but then the competition opened up to Americans, so they moved from Cuban cigars so that the same the cigar could be used at every event.

Next year, it will be a Rocky Patel, named after the event. Good idea on behalf of Rocky.

As Prez says, Hats off to Marko. It really has taken off as an event. People take it very seriously, that's why I don't compete. I'd be disqualified for life before I even lit my cigar! :)

It's hard to make it past the 1 hour mark as relighting is not allowed. Competitors sit over a barely lit cigar so it doesn't burn too fast, if it goes out you're out.

I mean; looking over my cigar review notes from this year only a handful of cigars required a relight at any point. But I suppose if you're trying to smoke as slowly as possible then there's the X factor that you've gone too slow and the cigar goes out. I didn't really consider that enough.

3+ hours on a petit corona is insanity, let alone close to 4 hours.

People look at me like I'm crackers when I tell them they shouldn't be smoking a robusto faster than 1-1/2 hours if they want the best flavors out of it.

This kind of thing fascinates me. All competitions are silly if you dig down far enough. We spend massive amounts of money, time, and general life force competing at silly things and, even crazier, watching other people compete at silly things.

I'm with ya. I don't know if it's shoddy technique, great technique or something in between, but when someone states a smoke time for a cigar I usually double it or at least add 50% more time to know how long it will take me. A petit corona in under an hour means I threw away a third.
