Cohiba Robusto 2017 (CRW)

This particular cigar came to me via the UK Box Pass ( thanks to@RDB) and was the choice for the weekend review as it's the only Cohiba I have in my possession at the moment.

It's a well made cigar, if a little veiny, with a good weight and consistent give down the length of the wrapper. The cold draw is immaculate and tastes of vanilla.

On lighting it comes across as very creamy and mild reminding me very much of the H Upmann robustos I've recently finished from the 2007 travel humidor (which remains, as beautiful a thing as ever). There's a touch of handbag to it - lightly musty, newspaper and fresh bread. The vanilla of the cold draw comes through and the ash stacks pleasingly during the first third. Unfortunately though nothing much happens in the taste department.

It remains mild going into the second third and remains resolutely uninteresting, picking up a little strength. With an audible crack the wrapper splits, giving the only interest so far.

I leave the band on to alleviate any further splitting into the final third. A slight spice on the lips and it looks like a tree bud popping in the springtime. The until now perfect burn line disintegrates in an act of allegiance with the split and a rather pretty filigree of burn spreads along the flapping wrapper section. I take the band off and the split has continued under. I give it a bit longer but a bitterness develops and I give up on it.

All in all a disappointment. There's better robustos out there for 3/5 of the price of a Cohiba - D4, HU2 certainly, PLPs even. I've never bought a box of Cohiba and half the time I smoke one I'm let down by construction or flavour. In that regard this one didn't disappoint.

Gah, sorry about that! The most inconsistent marca of all... a good one is great (almost worth the 2x price tag), but so many are lousy!

Shame that you didn't have one of the better quality ones. They sure can be fantastic when they are on.
