Ken Gargett Posted March 18, 2019 Posted March 18, 2019 i see that there is a plan in motion for the Ashes this year, to have players wear name and numbers on their back. why? in what possible way does that advance anything? at an absolute stretch i could sort of understand, though loathe, the concept of names on their backs. but what does a number do? it does not represent positions on the field or in the batting order. it does absolutely nothing. so why? leave things alone. if they are not broken, leave them alone. or do these morons have to remind us every possible chance they get that they exist? sadly, they just remind us how stupid they are. 2
Fuzz AI Posted March 19, 2019 Posted March 19, 2019 Maybe the commentators and spectators have no clue who will be on the Aussie team?
helix Posted March 19, 2019 Posted March 19, 2019 Always a little apprehensive to open Ken's posts , I mean the titles....the end of civilisation or some seriously big lizards (flatties) but alas, no worries just Rugby this time. 1
El Presidente Posted March 19, 2019 Posted March 19, 2019 Dinosaur. You do realise that the only thing making money in cricket is 2020 and IPL? God forbid the long form of the game has to cover its own costs! You are lucky they don't discontinue test cricket. If all they are doing is putting names and numbers on the back then that is the bare minimum that should be entertained. I am thinking Aussie cricketers wearing speedos and teardrop tattoos while being sponsored by Bunnings, The Kiwi side doing a Haka. Being hit on the helmet means 6 runs is taken off the batting sides score. Test cricket meets James Caan Rollerball 1975. Watch the crowds flock in! Cake to the masses! The roman colosseum! 1
Fuzz AI Posted March 19, 2019 Posted March 19, 2019 Players wearing electrodes. Every time a boundary is scored, the bowling team gets an electric shock. Every time a batsmen gets out, the batting team gets a shock. Coaches are given a set number of "tactical" shocks. At the end of the match, the losing side (coach included), gets an electrical shock. That I would pay to see.

The roman colosseum! first, caan's rollerball was a boring heap of crap film. yes, proud to be a dinosaur. there is not a single game of one day or sauv blanc cricket from the last 12 months which i can remember a thing about and i suspect that applies to the vast majority of fans. it is endless mindless swill to occupy the dimwitted. on the other hand, there have been a number of truly wonderful test matches (during which everyone says why on earth is test cricket not more popular). i will watch a little of the world cup as that has thrown up some top contests in the past and is a little more than one more exhibition game designed for no other reason than to part the simple from their cash. but what, seriously anyone?, what does putting a number on a back do for anything? it signifies nothing. it makes nothing more understandable for the uninitiated. it makes no possible advance to anything, least of all the game of cricket. it is doing something simply for the sake of doing something - something you have opposed, rightly so, in other spheres. i'm off to the barricades.

Simple answer: cash. Money, moolah, big bucks. I have no idea about other sports, but in soccer, jerseys sell -- big time. The top European clubs sell between 1.5-2 million jerseys every year, and a flocked jersey with the name and number of a star player can go for as much as 150-200 dollars apiece. The clubs themselves have a margin of around 50%. Do the maths.
