“Lookin out your Backdoor”

Recommended Posts

I’ve been thinking of starting this for awhile.

Due to the great diversity of this community I thought it would be fun to see what everyone’s backyard looks like. So post a picture of your backyard!

PS: Please don’t post pics of your posterior, nobody wants to see that.

Since you guys seem to like these I will share some photos from my safari.

It's not letting me add bulk photos so just shared a few, also these were taking with a phone camera. 8351a58f5d0a5b869aa7c2450357b2c7.jpgfa217b92aabdff763318088bebb9d226.jpgb205c877dad58e65251cd6dabf23c5ef.jpgd14dbd674807b790f66e87ee9ebb30be.jpg84a203d2c74af98dd793bc9308bda0c4.jpg31c276bff1f99db73811951b9616cb25.jpg84393899dd55e39be2f33df6cf3f4f20.jpg

great stuff.

when i visited Ngorongoro Crater, a very long time ago, i think that there might have been a really basic old hotel on the rim but bugger all else. we camped on the edge of the rim, which got a bit exciting in the early morning when a local elephant decided to investigate what we were. didn't hang around (better than camping on the edge of lake tanganyika when a large hippo decided it would rush out of the lake and straight into our camp. we had been sitting in a large circle around a campfire and it went through the group to the centre of the circle. seemed to be a bit bewitched by the fire. eventually slowly went back into the lake. we certainly gave it plenty of room).

the crater was amazing. at one stage, our group was in a couple of vehicles and the one in front of us was rammed by a grumpy rhino. watched a lion hunt (which failed). so much more.

an unmissable thing to do.

You got to see some things up close and personal, most people don't get that chance.

In the Serengeti camp I had hyenas fighting and hitting my tent, now it's sounds fun to tell the story but at the time you can imagine the fear I had.

But yeah it's one of them things that are hard to describe and photos don't do justice.

i was really lucky when i went through africa. spent the best part of 6 months there. our timing was so often so fortuitous.

crossed the sahara mid december so it was for the month that was freezing there. as well as ngorongoro, the serengeti had the migration going.

we went to the nyiragongo volcano. you see docos now, because it is apparently one of the most active volcanos in the world and there are apparently accommodation units built there which is bizarre. but when we went, nothing like that. a crumbling old scientist's hut which we camped in. you had to hike 12,000 feet straight up the side through the jungles. amazing stuff. different now, but when we were there, it was pretty quiet. since then, seriously puffing and bubbling.

when we did the gorillas in the virungas, it was only about two years after diane fossey was murdered, although at the time, that seemed like eons earlier. it was $40 for the entire trip and overnight accommodation in the jungle huts and food and guides and all. now? a fortune. and we got to spend about three hours with the gorillas and even have them come over and touch you, if they wanted - pretty spooky. nowadays, much much stricter.

Oh wow you done 6 months that would have been amazing.
But yeah prices are a lot higher now but I guess they need the funding so worth it.

I ended up cancelling after 3 months and had to leave South Africa and return home cause of the craziness in the world (C19).

Here will add a few more photos to keep the rest of the guys entertained.

But its one of them things I would encourage people to do. d86f9bf81c789a458020c16bc488982b.jpgaed941476a38f1013751bb1b9f5254d4.jpg5b360e75220df26ded3162d8bbf49c9c.jpgea648bb9e7c5fd3bdbda4f7a1821b8af.jpgd8c6a976af4c4dae88096d39d62c99d6.jpg095dad235e51a78b6ff275457c83c64d.jpg164f070ee6c55e738568fe1f5f94cda1.jpg
